Fybush: Lost 45s gone from WROR?

http://bostonradiowatch.com/ says Greater Media did take Barry Scott off their WROR despite "great ratings, a strong listener support and loyal advertisers." The column says while Barry's show was pop-oriented the station's "classic hits" was more rock oriented. So, apparently GM felt Shaun Cassidy wouldn't mix well with Queen, Led Zep, Heart etc

WROR has been rock oriented Classic Hits when Barry Scott first joined the station. It didn't fit the format then, so why are they making this decision now? Barry's show is unique and a breath of fresh air on commercial radio. Guess the next stop is public radio, Satellite or the Internet. Sadly, all specialty shows that don't fit the station';s format are going in this direction.

Yes, a foolish move. When you have a show (a destination show) that attracts listeners on a weekend you should stick with it even if it is a bit different from the usual. Personally WROR was never my thing - I was more into WODS when they were around - but would flip it on for the lost 45s.

Maybe WCRN-AM will give him a home. They recently added Mike Harvey on Saturday nights so Barry Scott's Lost 45s on Sunday nights would be a great addition! News / Talk weekdays, the greatest hits on weekends!

Many stations air Casey Kasem's AT 40 of the 70's on the weekend with many songs that haven't been on the air in decades with no issue. At least Barry's show was for the most part LOCAL and not a rebroadcast of old shows.

WSRS/Worcester (which has a pretty strong signal towards Boston if not in Boston itself) has AT40 80s on Sunday mornings. So why not add Lost 45s to Sunday night. In the age of voicetracking, Barry probably wouldn't even have to be live in WSRS's studio. WSRS does have Delilah weeknights (not sure about Sunday nights) but Barry is a lot better than Delilah anyway.

Aren't we forgetting "North Shore 104.9"?
He would be a perfect fit, there!

I doubt they would pay him what he wants, unless Barry sold his own time.

They have cut back on staff up there, lots of second rate bird fed talent there imho

plus the signal in Boston is near zero

And CLUELESS management.

Welcome to the radio business.

Most of us work for "someone else". The owners who run these stations have the right to make decisions based on what they perceive as best for said station.

Sometime they are good, sometimes they are bad.

In either case, sometimes they are not what we like. (I did not like the WBOS no-DJ policy...but, hey, it seems to be working for them...they have higher ratings that anytime in their history. That's life.)

Something we all learn pretty early in this business.

Yes, since WBOQ moved their transmitter from Gloucester to Topsfield, they gained in the Merrimack Valley, Southern NH, and the Metro Northwest of Boston (Routes 2/3/495 area), but lost a lot of what little they had in metro Boston. By default, 19 watt co-channel WRBB from Northeastern University actually gained a bit of coverage.

Not right at all

That's not right that they took "Lost 45's" off the air. His show was alright. Not bad at all. What do they mean rock oriented? wror plays some Stevie Wonder, and some Marvin Gaye.
So what do they mean?
that's not right that they did that

Thank you for the "welcome," you're about 34 years too late. I would hope more people on this forum would engage in more conversation, and less condescension. I tend to see a LOT of the latter here, and many of your posts seem to support my observation.

Now, back to the topic.

"Lost 45's" has been on WROR since its inception in the 80's. (The show, not the station) Lost 45s has survived one frequency and several format changes and tweaks. It truly is a "stand alone" product regardless of the station that exists around it. The show has had its own "built in" audience since its inception, and has expanded from its one-pony show of WROR. "Lost 45s" is a VERY marketable product which has proven itself over the past three decades. Suddenly a new management arrives (presumably from out-of-town) and declares that this show is "out of place" amongst the rest of the station. Is the cume and revenue DOWN in this time segment? Will replacing the show with "regular format," most likely voicetracked, INCREASE ratings and revenue for this daypart? Unless there is a "secret weapon" under their trenchcoats, then, yes, I would maintain that this new management is clueless; clueless about the stations heritage, clueless about their history, and clueless about their audience.

Thoughts, anyone?

Of all the dayparts, Sunday night is probably the least important and should be used for shows like Barry's. If the show is still doing well, why cancel it? Yeah..like it's going to dilute the rest of the station. I agree, probably management from out of the market who probably wasn't even aware of the show.
Clueless management, indeed.
