Fybush: RKO hosts shift (Kuhner AM drive, VB midday)

RKO program dir after seeing ratings after Kuhner move to mornings: "As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."

Bob, without question this is my the best post I have read since joining this site. Accurate, to the point and extremely
funny.

Maybe over the weekend I will try and list my favorite Kuhner moments.

I saw both Michael Graham and Todd Feinberg over the summer at a mutual friends cookout. At that time Graham was doing communications work for a conservative organization in DC, he still writes a column for the Herald and calls in to a radio station in Ireland.

As far as I know Feinberg is still doing afternoons on TIC in CT.

Thanks for the info, John.

It's unfortunate that 'RKO can't find a time slot - perhaps weekends at first? - for either Severin or Graham. Heck, given the poor quality of Mike Siegel's syndicated show, you'd think one of them could occupy the 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM slot. I believe Graham is younger than Severin so, unless he really PO'd somebody in power in Boston radio, I would hope there could be a spot for him sooner rather than later.

Of course, this would cost money having "live, local" that late in the evening, so......

It would also require one of those hosts to want to work such hours. For the kind of money that day-part pays. Which isn't what they're used to.

Would you want to give up your weekend nights?

Thanks for the compliment! I think they don't aim to fill slots with tradionally low listenership with local content, unless there could be a good return.

btw for those being let go by iHeart you can feel good knowing the bankrupt company wants to give $33 million to top bosses as motivation.

(Tune of Weird Al Christmas at Ground Zero)
It's Christmas at Clear Channel, there's layoffs on the way
Now we gotta tell Bob he lost his job and all his takehome pay

Everywhere the rating shares are droppin'
It's the end of old CC...

Hey Bob, try this oldie but moldy: https://www.indymedia.org/media/2005/12//830350.mp3

Yup! Know that well. btw ironic that WFNX was part of the Boston Phoenix who lectured against evil corporations. When Mindich wanted to sell, did he find a buyer who could keep their tradition of alternative radio alive? No, he sold to Clear Channel! And now it's hot new country from that rodeo-lovin' city where I was born, Lynn MA. (The paper would soon fold)

Hey, I went to a rodeo at Fraser Field in Lynn back when WBOS was country. In fact, the radio station was the main sponsor.

I do not know Sevrin but I remember a conversation I had with him years ago about he had no interest in doing an evening show on 96.9. or RKO. I would guess he believes an evening show on RKO is beneath him.

I wish they would replace Joe Pags and Siegel with John Batchelor. Batchelor runs overnights on AM1200. Some may find his show dull but even with all the same Pro Trump commentary that I can hear on a multitude of programs I still find his show informative.

I don't know Jay at all, nor have we ever spoken, since I'm not a radio insider, but, IIRC, he was on WRKO evenings before he went over to 96.9 WTKK. True, he did make disparaging remarks about AM radio since he was obviously delighted to be on an FM talk station. And, yes, he had to eat those words and do some time at Rush Radio AM 1200 before that fell apart. However, I believe you are correct in that he prefers afternoon drive and not evenings.

As another poster mentioned, besides the fact that iHeart cannot afford to run live local talent in the evening and at night on WRKO, it is highly unlikely that Severin, and probably Graham as well, has any interest in those hours.

As for Bachelor or Jim Bohannon: they're from Westwood One, are they not, and iHeart probably prefers its own in-house syndication operation for content, although it's made exceptions for both Bachelor and Mark Levin on Talk 1200.

Mike Siegel sounds fine whenever he does his program on WRKO live from Boston. His syndicated offering is another story altogether.

I had heard Severin had made fun of AM radio, even calling it fart radio.Though the first time many of us heard him was years before his 96.9 gig when Gene Burns had a nightly show syndicated by WOR, carried by WRKO and he was thrown in when Burns abruptly left. The show eventually went to Gil Gross.

When Jay got hired by WXKS 1200 he mentioned his new gig on Facebook.
"Is that, like, on AM?" one Jay loyalist asked.

In 07 Howie tried to jump to WTKK but it ultimately failed.I do remember a crossover between Jay and Michael Graham where they were hinting at their upcoming colleague: "Can we say, drive my Carr?," Severin asked. Howie was interviewed by Ch 4 about his new hours which were to start Oct 1 of that year but a judge prevented the move.He didn't escape from Entercom till 2014.

Over the years WRKO tried local talk in the 7 pm and 10 pm slots including Two Chicks Dishing, VB's Pit (2002 or so); election related show once a week with Joe Battenfeld, even shows with Moe Lauzier after a big blizzard. Kuhner did 7 pm specials after the marathon bonbings and elections.
At some point they went syndie after 7 pm.WTKK also did night time talk.

iHeart sticks with local nighttime talk on WBZ.

nowradioguy: yes the RKO night time show was 10 pm, I believe. The show where he filled in for Burns was about 7 or 8p, again via WOR, and was years earlier.I think long ago RKO had Jerry Williams till 6, Dick Lutsk with sports till 8, then syndie.
By Sep of 94, Rush and Howie were on WHDH 850 back to back.HDH ended with a toilet flush sound effect; WEEI sports radio moved to 850, Rush and Howie to 680, and Jerry to mornings.

He was on the "old" morning show from time to time, and I believe he's also doing a daily podcast... or was, at one point.

I do miss the free breakfasts he used to buy us once a month at Firefly's :)

WRKO this morning? According to a tweet they sent out:

>>We hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving! On this morning from 6-10am is Michael Harrison!

Of TALKERS magazine.
Wikipedia:
>>Talkers acquired RadioInfo.com, a radio news and information site previously owned and operated by the estate of Doug Fleming, in August 2012.
That site's message boards would continue to be held by the Fleming estate.

From WRKO site last Feb
>>This morning Michael Harrison, of Talkers Magazine, sits in with Kim Carrigan as VB takes a day off.
