FYI -- SC flipped Knox Oldies to Jack

Just an FYI for Nashville radio fans -- South Central flipped their Knoxville oldies station to Jack today. Of course, those of us here in Nashville are wondering what took them so long...

Because the Jack people would not license Class A's. Now ABC is responsible for markets 40 or 50 on down and they're not as choosy in smaller markets as the actually licensor.

Knoxville won't have nearly the same pop as Nashville, because even with two Class A's, they don't come close to covering the sprawling Knoxville SMSA.

The deal is for markets 41 on down which would in clude Indianapolis IN, Jackson MS and Nashville TN It is a good think these markets flipped to jack before the Deal with ABC happened..

I had a feeling I wouldn't like this and I was right. I listened to the one in Knoxville to day and it didn't sound that good. You can listen to the new jack at http://www.knoxoldies.com.

So I've got to ask: what do you like/dislike about the ABC/JACK? Remember that it's day 1 for the satellite feed...but let me know.

Well, first off, the fact that it's even remotely affiliated with ABC makes the whole thing go straight to crap.
______________

I heard that they made a very quick decision to flip the stations because of a rumour that one of the other companies leaked about possibly flipping to the format later in the week. This might explain why they chose the ABC satellite feed. Maybe South Central will take it in-house and produce it locally after they get up and going? The Knoxville oldies station used to use most of the database/library/etc. from their former Nashville oldies station, so why not do the same with the "Jack" format? Also, the local sweepers and drops that were inserted in the satellite feed sounded rushed and homemade. I would expect if they do keep the satellite fed version of "Jack" that they will have some better imaging and sweepers cut. Also, they had periods of silence going in and out of commercial breaks, as well as sweepers running over commercials at times, etc. I'm sure that will all be corrected in a few days as well. Anyway, should be interesting to see how this develops. Right now, I'm waiting to see if anyone else is waiting to pick up the oldies format. Could Citadel or Journal have been baiting them because they wanted the oldies format. I could see Citadel doing oldies on AAA "98.7 the River" WOKI, or Journal possibly giving the format another go at "93.1 the Point" WMYU. These would be the two most likely canidates for flips.
Also, most of the local imaging that the new "Jack" has only mentions the 95.7 frequency. Maybe South Central is considering splitting off the 106.7 signal and keeping oldies there. Who knows? Anyway, both are class A signals, and neither are really great for covering the spralling market. But the 106.7 signal is especially bad in lots of areas like the affluent West Knoxville area, so a standalone format on that signal would be hard to pull off. But if it was the only choice for oldies and done very cheaply, it might do ok.

So, what happened to the air staff? Was everyone shown the door except the program director? Any plans to staff the station, anyone know? We have a spin off of the Jack format in St. Louis called The Arch, they have a full air staff and are doing quite well in the ratings so far.

I guess this means that the Oldies format is slowly going straight to AM or Sirius/XM Satellite Radio Recievers

Now Knoxville has 2 variety hits stations

In case anyone hasn't heard; Knoxville just got a second "Jack" type, variety hits station. Besides South Central's "95.7 Jack FM", on Thursday, Citadel flipped AAA formatted WOKI "98-7 the River" to "98-7 Earl FM" with the slogan "We Play Everything". So far it is similar to "Jack FM", but seems to be more classic hits based and a bit softer than "Jack FM". Anyway, should be interesting to see what happens. The website at www.theriver987.com has a logo for "Earl FM" and says a website is coming soon.

That's Citadel

Yeah, that's Citadel. Always a step behind.
______________

This is the final piece of the recent changes to hit their Knoxville stations. Of course, they also overhauled their Chattanooga stations in the past few months. Is it time now to pay attention to some of the rumors out there about Nashville, especially now that the GM's gone? Could Duke or Earl hit town? (Waitaminnit... why does that last question remind me of doo-wop?...)
