G ROCK RADIO...RETRO ROCK

Awesome...each one gets better than the last.

They've played so many good tracks I can't even list them.

I'm glad they did this again. I enjoy these weekends the most.

I really enjoyed this weekend. Here is a list of some acts that I was pleasantly surprised to hear on G Rock Radio: New York Dolls, Sonic Youth, Catherine Wheel, Charlatans UK, KMFDM, Dinosaur Jr., Whale, Buck O Nine, Lush, Jesus & Mary Chain, Urge Overkill, etc. All of these acts are seldom (if ever) played on G Rock Radio - you're lucky if you hear any of them on the '90s At Noon. In addition, there were also some tracks by the likes of Depeche Mode, The Smiths, The Cure, The Clash, and 311 that were very unexpected as well. I applaud G Rock Radio for having these weekends every so often, and the disc jockeys for selling pretty much every track they played.

The only disappointing thing is that it's over now after 50 hours or so, and now it's back to the monotony of the same old Red Hot Chili Peppers and My Chemical Romance songs, along with the same tired library tracks by Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, Staind, Fuel, etc. that have been played ad nauseum for years. If only G Rock Radio could combine this weekend's eclecticism with a better selection of Currents (Stone Sour, Evanescence, and Shinedown among other acts do not belong on any station that calls itself "Alternative"), they would be a fantastic station instead of being simply mediocre. I guarantee that their ratings would improve - the regular format is just too bland for many people to listen to.

Seeing how Stone Sour hit #2 on the Alt chart, Evanescence hit #4, and Shinedown hit #7... the rest of the world begs to differ.

Stone Sour is basically late '80s hard rock - think Tesla but with more of the post-grunge style of singing.

Evanescence is like a cross between Meat Loaf and Heart - they combine ham-fisted melodrama with banal material that sounds like it came from a songwriter for hire like Diane Warren. Amy Lee might think she's gothic by the way she dresses, but I don't even hear a slight goth influence in the music. Evanescence is to goth what Simple Plan is to punk - the comparisons start and end with the way they dress.

Shinedown are like a cross between Bad Company and Lynyrd Skynyrd - they alternate between Southern Rock and corporate rock. Basically, they're like Nickelback with a better singer.

The high positions all of these acts attained on Modern Rock has everything to do with the CBS/Clear Channel influence - thanks to companies like this, the lines between Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock have been blurred almost completely. It's a shame that other companies feel the need to follow their business model instead of making a conscious effort to serve their market and audience. While not nearly as bad as stations from these conglomerates, G Rock Radio still takes more liberties with the Alternative format than many other stations I've heard. Really, I must say that I'm surprised they haven't jumped all over Hinder and Buckcherry. I'm thankful for that and I hope it stays that way.

is G rock playing the new Daughtry song?

Not yet, but since they love playing that style of rock music (see: Stone Sour, Shinedown, Bush, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.), it's only a matter of time.

Nothing against Daughtry - he seems to be rather talented. But his style is just so generic, it's been done to death by countless other acts. This is why the Alternative format has been in a period of stagnation - because it keeps playing watered-down pseudo-grunge acts rather than staying true to the roots of the format.

G Rock isn't playing Daughtry, but the Ace is. Waht do you think of that SoulCrusher?

The Ace is very eclectic - too eclectic for its own good, IMO. They play a few Classic Rock acts as well. WJSE reports as an Active Rock station ever since they started branding the station as The Ace. Technically they're more of an Active/Alternative hybrid because they play acts like The Killers, Dashboard Confessional, Beck, and others. They might be playing Daughtry, but they're also playing some good acts that G Rock hasn't so much as touched yet - Jonezetta, Guster, The Kooks, Young Love, Dropping Daylight and others. And it goes without saying, but they also play edgier acts that G Rock won't touch for fear of upsetting the soccer moms, like Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage and Atreyu.

The Ace is trying to cover all the bases in its market given the lack of another Active or Alternative. G Rock, while they do play lots of good new artists and throw in an occasional surprise between the constant repetition of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day, has too much overlap between other stations. Because they choose to play it safe, that means they share a good chunk of their playlist (both new and old) with Mainstream Rocker WRAT and several Hot ACs in the market. I like both stations, and believe we could use a station like The Ace that plays the edgier acts that receive no airplay here. But both stations could definitely use some tinkering and a slight change in direction - the ratings for both could be better.

Actually, the Ace reports as an Alternative station. Score more spins for Daughtry on the Alt chart.

Now G Rock is playing those corny Aerosmith wannabes Buckcherry. Just when you're ready to give them credit for dumping Nickelback and 3 Doors Down, they come around and play something just as bad, like Shinedown and these losers. They probably would have played them a long time ago, if not for the song "Crazy B*tch" that the station might have considered offensive to their target demographic. There are tons of better acts that G Rock could be playing, but they think the listener wants to hear generic Neanderthal Rock. Maybe they should consider changing their slogan to "G Rock: So Easy A Caveman Can Listen To It!".

Here is something interesting I was told from some one in G Rock Radio's sales department. GM Frank Calderero is out. Is there a female PD coming in and a new GM? Format change? ???
