I'm an old WLIR jock, and lately I've been checking out the old FM1063 signal. I get it up here in Staten Island pretty good. I admit, I was disappointed when they changed and sounded like a hybrid of an adult comtemporary, PLJ type station and a weird triple A format. But since Terrie Carr has taken over, the station sounds really good, especially for those of us in a certain, ah, shall we say age demographic. I am happy to see that Scott Lowe, who had a great show back in the '80s or 90s' with Post Modern PST, hosting a request show on Saturday night. He plays stuff I haven't heard in years, with some extended mixes we used to throw on LIR. Terrie has done a good job balancing the new stuff with the classics, and all the jocks sound like they are having fun involving the listeners, which I wish more stations would do.

Of all the things going on at G-Rock the only thing you can point out is Scott Lowe? I believe he could do a little better in the personality dept. For the most part the station does sound good. A good Mid-day with Terrie strong afternoon With Matt Knight and nights with The old DHA jock Matt Murry back to his edgy self. But mornings is a whole different story....by far the weakest link on that station. Kramer and Erin sound like they're reading a script! like bad soap opera actors and just boring nothing entertaining about it. The promos only tell you about "traffic 4x's an hour" How's that gonna want to make me tune in? And games like "Guess how much change is in my pocket?" Is this not a an almost top 50 market? They really need to re-think that morning show. ???

Scott's show is very good, regardless of what you think. I can't think of a single station in the surrounding areas playing even a tenth of the stuff he played last Saturday (or at least what I heard). It was eclectic in an old FM1063 kind of way, and I liked it. It reminded me of the old LIR days (I'm sure Malibu Sue would agree). With playlists as tight as they are, I would think this kind of programming decision would be applauded around here. Kudos to Terrie for allowing her jocks to do something interesting. Sue me for taking notice.

You guys and gals are lucky i am from louisville ky and come visit my bro in long branch sometimes and i will say you guys are lucky to have a decent commercial alt station and a good triple a station. We only have here a triple a station no commercial alt station.I like what your pd terri has done with the station i enjoy it. Miss the old modern rock by the jersey shore but times change and in the mcdonalization of radio today g rock does well for themselves thanks terri ;D

Where is soulcrusher he always puts in his 2 cents and i enjoy his rants very thought provoking whether you agree with him or not.

There's times I tune in to G-Rock and listen for a while, but both last night and this morning I tuned in and heard what, for lack of a better term, I'd call "metallic alternative"; both were immediate tuneouts for me.

Let's see...eh, looks like their music log was down last night, into this morning. No clue what it might have been (it was at about 8:10am) but it made me switch right over to 90.5 which, to their credit, were playing Kaiser Chiefs cover of The Move's "Flowers In The Rain".

Remember, the old FM106.3 DNA is over at 90.5 these days...whatever G-Rock is now, it doesn't derive from 106.3 at all. Supposedly they bought the library, but did they even keep it? I'd scrape up some cash somehow to get a piece of that...

(Full disclosure: My show airs at 90.5, so there's inevitably a bit of bias there. But most of the time I'm a button pusher car-radio wise, and I try to call 'em like I see 'em.)

No offense, hubcity, but GRock is a commercial alternative, not a college based Triple A. My point was for a commercial signal, a show not rooted in a selector program playing real requests is refreshing. I'll be checking it out tonight.

Ok. I'm prob. gonna get a lot of heat on this board for saying this BUT i think G Rock is now sounding BETTER than FM 1063 in their final years. FM 106.3 in the last 2 years of its life was losing focus (granted Alternative was being sliced and diced w/ Nu Metal) but the old glory days for 106.3 were on its last life.

Unfortunatley instead of turning FM 106.3 into a better imaged , better sounding , all-in-all Alternative (ala KROQ, WFNX, KNDD) ... " G 1063 " went the PLJ route and we can see how that ended up.

It wasn't until the last year that G Rock really has found its place in my opinion. They keep it realistic while pushing the boundaries. They know they are a commercial station but they also are quirky about it. Come on , who plays Echo and the Bunnymen, Interpol, Bowie, Rob Zombie in one set???

Now im not saying GROCK is perfect, but they come pretty close to what Alternative should sound like in 2008.

HubCity - i listen to 90.5 and i must say i am a huge admirer of that station and your show. But you have to admit for a commercial alternative station - they sound damn good!

If they were able to find and then play my request for Guadalcanal Diary's "Litany (Life Goes On) on their all-request Saturday night show, I'm sure they've kept the music library. Maybe next time I'll request the Screaming Blue Messiahs! :)

Firstly, thank you so much - I really do appreciate that.

Secondly, you are absolutely right. They do sound damn good when compared with anything on the commercial band right now - in criticizing what I heard the last two times I listened, I didn't mention the good stuff they've been up to (not to mention that they've been programming Radiohead's "Bodysnatchers" for a while now, which I really hope was evidence they were playing something that deserved to be played, regardless of it being "worked" by a label...or am I being naive?)

In actual fact, I believe after a few false starts (where it appeared Darrin Smith was taking them refreshingly off the well-trodden road, and abruptly pulled back and left soon afterward) they're actually doing some interesting things. This morning brought with it a couple of good classic tracks, though I then got turned off by the commercial load, and finally left during the new Shiny Toy Guns track (which undoes any goodwill I extended toward that band before. Yecch.) But that's me - I'm sure there's somebody out there who'll like it...

Hm. A compliment went south there again. Let me reaffirm it - they do sound better than at any time since the sale, and their imaging is better than it has *ever* been.

None taken. We (and they) are what they are...

If you manage to get Flaming Mussolinis or Auto Da Fe on, *then* you'll know...

I can get the G Rock feed on 106.5 on occasion. I must say I love the presentation.

AMRay, when was your tour of duty with the Morey's?

I'll put it to you this way, I worked there before "Shriek of the Week" existed! Damn I'm oldish. Still, good luck to G tomorrow when the New Jersey ratings come out. Terrie is good people, and I think it will show tomorrow.
