GAB, can we get some relief? (Re: HS football broadcasts)

In Florida, the radio rights fee for playoff games is $50.00 per game. That's $250 if a team goes to the title game.

In Alabama, the radio rights fee for playoff games is $175 for the first four rounds, $200 for the championship game. That's $900 if a team goes to the title game.

In Mississippi, the radio rights fee for playoff games is $125 for the first four rounds, $275 for the championship game. That's $750 if a team goes to the title game.

Yet in Georgia, the radio rights fee for playoff games is broken down by market size. Level 1 is under 25,000 population and is $125 per game. Level 2 is 25,000 to 49,999 and is $175 per game. Level 3 = 50,000 population and higher and is $225 per game. For little old LaGrange, the radio rights fee is $1,125 if the Grangers go to the title game.

To the folks at the GAB...can you guys negotiate a little with the GHSA to get closer in line with the surrounding states?

My advice would be "be careful what you wish for".

Too much negotiating might lead to what I understand some schools have already wanted -- taking back their broadcast rights for the playoffs from the GHSA (presumably some sort of "buy back" option, since I don't see the GHSA giving up the revenue source) which would then lead to higher fees or the end of allowing broadcasts altogether.

And believe me, there's not a shortage of schools/teams/AD's that would like to see the broadcasting cut out altogether.

Ouch. Here in Tennessee, there are no rights fees for playoff games, unless you want to use one of their telephones at the actual championship game. Then it's 50 bucks.

I hope no one from the TSSAA reads this board.

But then again, in Tennessee virtually every team with 3 wins or more makes the playoffs and the TSSAA gets the gate, so I guess they are pretty flush now.
