Gaffney Station 1180 WFGN's License is Cancelled - Is it Still on the Air?

I just saw on the FCC website that Gaffney AM station 1180 WFGN has had its call letters deleted and has terminated its authority to operate. An FCC letter to the station states the station's license expired December, 2003, and the agency has no record of a renewal application. I have to wonder if the station is still on the air, however. A search of news articles for this station indicated that a representative of the station participated in a prayer event on the National Day of Prayer earlier this month on May 6 - just a few days before the date on the FCC letter:

2003 ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

And the FCC is just getting around to this???

I can fire up the Hammarlund HQ-140XA with the 300 foot antenna and see if I can hear them.

I never listen to AM, but I haven't heard of them and I've been in the GSP market since 2003.

The only Gaffney stations I ever heard of were the now-defunct WAGI and WEAC.

I'm in Gaffney, I'll check it out when they should sign on around sunrise.
They are a daytime only signal, reliably heard up to 20 miles away.
Their small tower is behind Limestone College on Leadmine Rd, on the south side of Gaffney.
Last time I checked signal on 1180 was about 6 months ago.
They were still Southern Gospel as "Your Spiritual Friend."

Unless the FCC has a file somewhere on this station we don't know about it sounds like the Gospel station needs help. I really don't think the FCC would let a station stay on the air since 2003 without a current license unless there is something going on in the background that they are aware of like a pending app or something. This also sounds like a southern gospel station on AM so why would they want to break the rules, making a ton of money? I don't think so. Broadcasting to a large listening audience, probably not, forgot to turn the station off, I don't think so. Like I said must be more going on than we know about.

Doesn't make sense at all. An application for renewal shows as being dismissed by the FCC on 1/25/2005 and that is the most recent application listed. Could there be some kind of legal issue that is allowing them to stay on the air pending the outcome or are they just thumbing their nose at the FCC?

Probably the latter. If I recall correctly, there were some stations in Greenwood (WLMA and WCRS) that were broadcasting without a license or something (Powell may know), I know it was something against the rules. They may think their little Gaffney AM is safe from the FCC.

WFGN has been listed on Radio-Locator for a long time,
if the license was deleted wouldn't it have been gone from that site too.

If 1180 was breaking the law by broadcasting illegally,
I would think they wouldn't sign-off their signal every night at sunset.

Honestly this station's audio sounds kinda distorted
or over-modulated, just too loud for an AM signal.

I wonder how many people here in my town even know about this station,
my guess is just a few hundred people.

You cannot absolutely, positively rely on the CBDS. There are still some filings and correspondence done by paper or which are mis-entered into the system.

WLMA, not WCRS had their license cancelled for numerous NALs and not paying the fine. Ron Moore who owned it died, but right before he did he sold the license to the Ellers. They also paid the fines, and the FCC has not decided whether to re instate or cancel the license completely.

This may take some time.......

August 31 - Still on air as if everything is cool (sign off at sunset - on at sunrise)

It's now listed on fccinfo.com as DWFGN-AM (D=Deleted) and has been removed from Radio-Locator.
Right now it is pretty much a pirate radio station.
Someone should go over there and tell them to stop broadcasting illegally or they will get a big fine from the FCC.

Their phone # is: 864-489-9436
and Address: (ironic) 1180 Leadmine Rd. Gaffney, SC 29340

I would say give them a couple days to a week or so and see if a reinstatement or change of some kind hasn't showed up on the FCC data base first, then check with them.
