Gainesville Fall Ratings

I see the Fall 12+ have been posted and the UF stations did OK. 103.7 was up about a point and slightly ahead of WTRS. Not sure what dates are covered so don't know if that is a combination of rock and country. Of course, K-Country was up more than three points so I'm sure they aren't worried at this point.

WRUF "Sports Radio 850" was back in the ratings after falling out for the summer. They are rated higher than the other two sports stations so looks like the move to all sports may be paying off. I have to admit I have been listening quite a bit during the day. The three local hosts plus Tim Brando do a great job. It'll be interesting to see what happens once football season is over.

The move to all sports on WRUF-AM was, indeed, a very smart move. The local hosts are doing an excellent job in keeping the station local while providing a desirable sports product. The other two sports stations have signal problems plus most of the sports programming on WGGG and WYGC is syndicated network programming from ESPN and Fox Sports respectively with very litttle local focus.

As for WRUF-FM, I'm sure over time the numbers will improve in Gainesville; However, I don't see it overtaking WOGK as K Country has been well established as the market's number one station since 1994 and has a far suprior signal over any other market station serving Ocala and Gainesville. WRUF-FM covers Gainesville and North Florida fine, but it still has signal issues in Ocala and Marion County, and for the most part, nothing can be done to improve WRUF-FM's signal over Ocala and Marion County under current FCC technical rules.

The same technical challenges that WRUF-FM has are the same that WTRS is faced with. While WRUF-FM has signal issues in Ocala, likewise, WTRS has signal issues in Gainesville. For this reason WRUF-FM is essentially a Gainesville and North Florida station while WTRS is an Ocala and Marion County station.

When I was at WTRS (almost 20 years ago now...yikes!), the PD wanted us to work on being more of a "Gainesville" station. He thought we could dominate in Alachua Co. as well as Marion Co. (This was before the markets were combined.) I told him I thought this would be extremely difficult for 2 reasons: 1) GC-101 was a solid, great-sounding, local Gainesville station and 2) WTRS did not have anything close to signal parity with WYGC in Gainesville.

It didn't work, of course, and WTRS has never been a strong force in Gainesville. Even when they were simulcasting on 104.9, people still perceived it as an "Ocala" station...which it is.

The flip of WRUF has little to no impact on this book.

BTW- Survey dates were 9/16 to 12/20ish I believe.

Expect to see the ratings for WRUF-FM begin to fall off.

Gator Football and a flip mid-book are the only things that saved them this time around.

How'd the Buzz 100.5 do now that Rock 104 went bye bye?

WHHZ was up very slightly from a 1.3 to a 1.7. Really, the first book is meaningless since the WRUF-FM format switched halfway through.

Here's the Dix sales pitch: "Last Fall we had more than double 103.7's audience, now we have more than triple their audience. We should send them a thank-you note!"

Fall to Fall, 103.7 gained 2 percent... WTRS gained 32 percent... K-Country gained 45 percent.

WRUF-FM flipped four weeks into the book, meaning that they were country for 8 of the 12 weeks, making a "Wait until next book" argument sort of weak. Like it or not, their sales staff is going to be battling the perception that 103.7 went through all this hoopla and the only impact it had was to give K-Country its best Arbitron book in years.

Yes, of course, another book comes out in three months (one that no one cares about) and then another one in another three months, et cetera. But the truth is that the Big Splash they were hoping for didn't materialize.

Round One goes to the other guys.

Looking at the breakdowns even further, with persons 18-49...

OGK's weekly cume went up 6,500 while RUF-FM went down nearly 15,700 from last fall and 20,000 from Fall 08.

HHZ is up 4,000 from Fall 09 and 10,000 from Fall 08.

Me too. Any way to get the Buzz signal strengthened or is this as good as it gets? Love to hear it here in Belleview instead of WJRR or 98 Rock.

I believe our resident engineer, Kyle Magrill, is better qualified to answer that question; However, my understanding is, technically speaking, WHHZ is as good as it gets under current FCC rules.

I can answer that (and Kyle can correct me if I'm wrong)

Simply put. No. It's already been upgraded once. It's throwing as much RF as it can towards the population centers from Trenton.

WHHZ and WKZY are running through a combiner out there in the pasture.

Yup. I'm actually impressed that WHHZ works as well as it does. That's all ffffolks!

All in all, it's appears their signal is just as good as Rock 104's was back in the day. Meaning, it covers Gainesville well enough.

In town, it's fine in a car, but much too weak to be received well on a clock radio or walkman. It does better west of town, though. I would say WHHZ is to Gainesville about what ROCK104 was in Ocala.

Have gotten the signal many times near Ponte Vedra Beach (US 1) in St. Johns county. That's pretty good....

I’ve been down Gainesville the past couple weekends – at least you guys have a Too Jays LOL. I was wondering what exactly makes up the Gainesville market for radio ratings. Is it just Alachua and Marion counties? On the way through Bradford County,I was wondering if that’s part of the Jax market or that’s an areas that’s just not measured for radio ratings. There’s a lot of little communities between I-10 and Waldo Rd along 301 and I’m assuming they aren’t measured either? I’ve never been sure where the Jax market ends and Gainesville begins.
