Gainesville Notes

...One wonders if the University will one day sell off the property and diplex with another AM giving up the 5KW at night made possible with the 4 towers directional patter and let the FM translator take care of what audience the station has.

WRUF was originally on Radio Road on the UF campus. Sometime around 1948 it was moved to the Tower Road site which was quite rural at the time. Knowing that the land is quite valuable, they've been planning for the eventual sale for a couple of decades. The plan that I last heard was that they would simply move further out to a more rural setting. They figure that eventually they'll make money on the new site just like the one they're on now.

During the heyday of AM, WRUF made money. Lots of it. WGGG beat them because they had professional talent vs students, but the AM still made money. By the mid '80s, it was all over, though except for the sports.

Chances for two format changes! With WDVH-FM gone will they keep country on 980/94.1 and also keep Classic Hits on 100.9? I assume WDVH-FM is going religious given the new owners so MARC might change 106.9 but probably not given they aren't very adventurous. A smart move would be Magic (or the Buzz) to 100.9 with the stronger in-town signal. I guess we'll just have to stay tuned.

Taking WDVH non-commercial and out of competition by simulcasting The Joy FM... How many potential listeners will this add to Joy's audience?

I looked through the sales agreement and it says Marc will change the format of 106.9 prior to the closing and will not for five years have a CCM format on any of their stations. We'll have one format change at least!

I saw a "Sold" sign in front of the old WGGG building on Waldo Road. The tower has been taken down and a new cell tower put up behind the building, maybe on a different property.

Does anyone remember when WKTK moved out? I think it has been empty since.

I will be soon moving to Gainesville in the fall to attend the University of Florida so if anybody can give me a complete list of radio stations in the market (both AM and FM as well as HD), please give it to me. I wanna know.

I know I didn't say this earlier but listing the formats could've been helpful. Also what are the non-commercial ones?

You might go to www.radio-locator.com and search by market. That will give you a list of stations, and clicking on each will give you the format, although that site is known not to be totally up to date on formats. But it will give you a good idea.

The FCC has approved the sale of WXJZ (100.9) and WDVH-FM. Countdown to definite format change on 106.9 and probably on 100.9 and maybe on 94.1/980. 94.1 really sounds good technically so wonder if something other than country might be a better fit in Gainesville since they are losing the WDVH-FM simulcast.

I hope its other than country or classic hits. Since I'll be moving to Gainesville in less than thirty days, I hope they switch to something else. Maybe have a Dance Top 40 format? Gainesville had one and it makes perfect sense since its a college town and I'll end up going to that college (University of Florida).

While a dance format such as the Party has good ratings, it doesn't have the advertisers because none of the local businesses wants to attract UF students. The reason commonly given is "They don't buy local. They buy their cars, etc., in their home town" probably because "mom and dad" are financing such purchases and just do business locally in their own home town/state. I. E., Persons 12 - 24 just isn't a big sellable demo.

I was told that Wow 100.9 will remain classic hits. And, apparently Marc Radio and Radio Training Network have a non-compete agreement whereas Marc Radio will not place CCM on any of its stations for a period of five years, leaving Joy FM and EMF's 88.3/88.7 as the markets only CCM outlets.
