Gainesville-Ocala Wish List...

A while back many participated in a market "Wish List" on the New York discussion board, mainly consiting of current formats and how particpants would like to see the overall radio landscape become in the NYC market... I had briefly introduced the same excercise here a few months ago, and with the recent WRUF-FM format change, this may be a good time to introduce the subject again for discussion.

Below is a listing of each market station followed by format, starting with the FM stations. The AMs follow. Next to each station call letters, make the necessary changes to reflect how you would like to see each station formatted.

WUFT-FM 89.1 - NPR News-Talk - Florida's 89.1
WYFB-FM 90.5 - Inspirational/Bible Teaching - BBN
WJLF-FM 91.7 - CCM - The Joy FM
WNDT-FM 92.5 - Classic Rock - Wind FM
WMFQ-FM -92.9 - Classic Hits - Big 92.9
WOGK-FM 93.7 - Country - K Country 93.7
WNDD-FM 95.5 - Classic Rock - Wind FM
WSKY-FM 97.3 – News-Talk – The Sky 97.3 FM
WKTK-FM 98.5 – Adult Contemporary – 98.5 KTK
WBXY-FM 99.5 – News-Talk – Star 99.5

WAJD-AM 1390 – Motown/Classic Soul
WTMN-AM 1430 – Gospel – Rejoice 1430

It's not that small of a market, actually. Wel over 500,000 people here, but the big problem is that very few stations reach the whole market. Among those that do are:

WNDT/WNDD/WNDN
WOGK
WKTK

Players that cover most of the market, but not all include:
WUFT
WRUF-FM
WSKY

Then there are those that can be heard in both halves, but have problems:
WTMG
WTRS
WMFQ
WMOP-AM and WGGG-AM

Everyone else effectively covers only one part of the market, including WHHZ, WKZY, WYFB and all of the rest. None of the single AMs cover both halves, with WRUF-AM and WMOP doing a fair job during the days, but WRUF-AM is gone in Ocala at night.

By the way, I think WVLG should be on the list, too as a player in Marion county. Also absent from the list are the LPFMs in both towns, for what that's worth.

Kyle - All great points, and I agree that WVLG should be on the list. That one completely slipped past me when I was compiling the outline. As for the LPFMs, I thought about adding them, but I am unfamilar with the formats on the Gainesville LPFMs. Feel free to add them if you like, and we will include them in the excercise. In the meantime here are two more additions to the list.

WITG-FM 104.7 - Oldies/Classic Hits - Real Oldies 104.7

WVLG-AM 640 - Adult Contemporary/Oldies - The Villages AM 640 WVLG

There are three LPFM frequencies in Gainesville and a total of five operating groups:

On 94.7 there is
WGLJ - Christian Bible teaching
WVFP - Also Christian teaching and Classical music for filler.
WGOT - Civic Media Center - AOL (All Over the Road). Marxist/liberal talk, blues, folk, eclectic, dance. Format varies by the program offered at any given hour and day.

95.7 - WERF (FunRadio) - oldies from 1956 through 1989.

107.7 - WPZM (Praize 107.7) - Gospel

Unlike WITG, none of the Gainesville LPFMs has a very good signal and none of them even cover all of Gainesville very well.

I can't remember the call letters but there is(or was) a low powered non-commercial classic country station out of McIntosh. Was really good when I heard it-no Bellamy Brothers, Tanya Tucker and other sorry music that passes for classic country.

96.5 fm

Mark,
I noticed that you had WAJD-AM 1390 – Motown/Classic Soul, no longer - all Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club, all the time! Have they settled on that format? Is is a sat based format or do it yourself? I will have to listen my next trip up north.

no one has answered the question as hand-- so I will start. Changes are in bold

WUFT-FM 89.1 - NPR News-Talk - Florida's 89.1

Let me get this straight....we are saying this is a "big" market, yet over half of these stations do not effectively cover the ENTIRE market? Seriously? And let me also understand there is only one CHR station listed here, WYKS-Kiss 1053, and their stick is insignificant in Ocala? So, if I live in Ocala I need to hope and pray I can get XL 1067 or 933 from Tampa? How and why does the FCC let all these cheesy LPFM's in the market?

Have always wondered how and why this station gets three frequencies...WNDT/WNDD/WNDN

WNDD etc. *needs* 3 to cover the market----well, two of 'em anyway. 107.9 is in Chiefland, basically a relay.

My wish is just for WVLG to cut out the modern stuff/dance/rock. A lot of what they are playing now can be heard on any FM around. Like Joe Donovan used to say on his former oldies show on WHAS Louisville, "if you're gonna play music on AM, ya gotta be different."

There is no more Sgt Pepper on AM 1390. I heard the new Motown/Classic Soul for the first time last weekend although I am not sure when the format change actually took place. It sounds as though it is all programmed "in-house" and automated with a few liners and positioning statements airing between every third or forth song.

SPORTSFANS

I have revised the list to reflect the current metro AM-FM call letters and formats. The list now includes the market LPFMs as well as distant WVLG-AM 640 and WRZN-AM 720 which both cover the South portion of Marion County. WNDN-FM, WDVH-FM, WLQH-AM, WEAG-AM-FM and WRGO-FM are not included since these stations are not a part of the Gainesville/Ocala MSA. Mark, nothing Urban about Magic 101.3 at all. I said CHR/Rhythmic... not CHR.

Consult the Urban chart, the Rhythmic chart and Magic's playlist and see what you come up with.

Vadar, what would you suggest flip to CHR to serve Ocala?

I know 104.3 in Inglis is always looking to sell, though even with a C3 upgrade-- I don't think it would cover the southern half of the market very well.

I always thought a WYKS/WOGF simulcast-- but the more I look at the coverage map, the less I think a good idea it would be (probably why Gillen never acted)

My suggestion, anyone!!! Living in Slocala is bad enough without playing with dipole antenna yearning for 93.3 FLZ or XL 1067. Was up in Hogtown the other day. Fun Radio 95.7, all over the board, bad hum in the signal. This really isn't broadcast quality, how and why are these LPFM's allowed on the air. The Hog in Daytona, also on 95.7, was coming in too. Odd, weird, and just plain annoying. What gives?

I can answer that.

There is a serious hum associated with the backup audio PC, which is probably what you heard. The backup audio source is unbalanced and we haven't had the time, or budget, to fix it, but it's only a problem when the backup is active. They do some sports programming on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays that is streamed from a station in Lake Butler. The site's Internet feed went down at High noon and the guys couldn't restart the main PC remotely, so the silence sensor kicked in and put the backup audio PC on the air until I could get out there late last night and reset the modem (I do have a day job). The backup PC is just a pile of songs played in no particular order, including some that are too new to be on the normal playlist. It's one of the ways that we can tell, by just listening, if the main PC goes down. Normally, the format plays a set of 60s, then 70s, then 80s, then 70s, then 60s, so that the listener doesn't jump years by too much. The format is intentionally broader than the typical tightly formatted oldies so that there are more songs in the rotation. They feel that, with exceptions, generally, if it made the top40, it should have some airplay. Higher rated songs get more airplay, of course.

The problem with the other stations on the channel swamping them is pretty serious. The transmitter is about 5 miles west of Gainesville, so it really only covers the area west of I-75. Between Tampa, Valdosta and Daytona Beach, there are a lot of mornings where they get killed, especially in Gainesville proper.

I believe you, but tell me why does the Magic 101.3 website say the format is "Blazin Hip Hop and R&B"? Look in the extreme top left corner of the home page www.magic1013.com and you will see what I am referring.

I see nothing but the logo in the extreme top left. now, on the right I see "blazin hip hop and r&b" but trust me, that positioner doesn't do the music justice now and i expect to see a change soon.
