Gainesville's 'KZY evolving to?

I don't usually listen to WKZY but had them on for a while this morning and noticed they aren't "80's 90's Whatever We Want" anymore. I'm no music expert so don't know if they are playing same music or not but sound is cleaner with minimal clutter and a live(?) guy chiming in once in a while. Here are the songs from the last hour:

10:02 AM NELLY FURTADO SAY IT RIGHT
10:05 AM PINK JUST LIKE A PILL
10:09 AM BLUE OCTOBER CALLING YOU
10:13 AM SANTANA feat. CHAD KROEGER INTO THE NIGHT
10:17 AM JANET JACKSON ESCAPADE
10:21 AM DAUGHTRY IT'S NOT OVER
10:25 AM GWEN STEFANI/AKON THE SWEET ESCAPE
10:29 AM NATALIE IMBRUGLIA TORN
10:33 AM MATCHBOX 20 HOW FAR WE'VE COME
10:40 AM BUCK CHERRY SORRY
10:44 AM FERGIE CLUMSY
10:47 AM Switchfoot Dare You To Move
10:51 AM CARRIE UNDERWOOD BEFORE HE CHEATS
10:55 AM SNAP RYTHM IS DANCER

The only decent ratings they ever had was when they first went to 100kw with adult standards as Kozy-FM but guess it was the wrong kind of audience for them.

A few weeks back, I noticed 'KZY had an afternoon opening posted in ALL ACCESS. Anyone know who got it? Or are they still looking?

Is Briton Jon still in that building? Never met the man, but listened to him quite a bit when he was doing afternoons at KTK in the early-mid 1990s. A strong talent who knows the market like few others do.

The Achilles' Heel of WKZY is Arbitron's merger of Gainesville-Ocala into one market. This occurred about 15 years ago after an intense lobbying effort by the heads of the 100kW FM sticks in the area. While great news for WKTK, WOGK, and WRUF-FM, this action severely hurt the smaller signals which could only cover Gainesville or Ocala reliably.

Because their trransmitter is located west of Gainesville and cannot be moved closer to Ocala (due to Cross City COL and proximity to WXXL/106.7/Tavares), WKZY is handicapped in the ratings. Therefore, it will likely never move out of the 2-3 share range.

They were advertising the Briton John/Leeza Gordon morning show this morning. I'll have to tune in off and on Monday and see what's going on. There hasn't been a format change around here in years so even a tweak is exciting! I wonder if they might be planning a run at Kiss although they tried that with 100.5 a few years back and that didn't work.

Wind-FM was clever to cobble together Class A FM's in Silver Springs, Alachua, and Chiefland and enable themselves to compete with the big boys.

Very good move. Plus, they got the Alachua and Chiefland CPs rather inexpensively.

The big loser in the market expansion was WYKS. Despite being only 3,000 watts, Kiss 105 routinely showed up #1 in Gainesville, due to the relatively low median age of it's residents. After the markets were combined, they were never a player because they could not penetrate Marion Co. effectively. WYGC suffered a similar fate. Which was sad because, under Nancy Keeney, WYGC was a *much* better radio station than WTRS in those days.

The 'no brainer' here for Pamal is to evolve Magic to an Urban AC, and take KZY to Rhythmic CHR (young Urban). But this is Gainesville, remember?? Common sense is thrown out the window. They can do this and probably expect large ratings. The days of the "one size fits all Urban" are over, and if Magic is still running Joyner in the morning and playing everything from 70s disco to rap like they where when I lived there, then that's what it is.

I'm thinking along the lines of what happened when Emmis bought RKS in NYC in the 90s (evolved them in the Adult direction) and turned QHT into Hip-Hop...JHM has numbers in the Gainesville book and KZY can take those numbers for themselves.

Not sure about the Afternoon situation, but I do know that the new PD is Matt "The Bratt" Derrick, formerly of KHTT/Tulsa and KNGY/San Francisco.

Well they are definitely going after KISS with the music swinging way over to the HOT AC side....and word on new talent being brought in is coming soon.....should be interesting to see if either station makes Gainsville listeners forget about XL in ORlando

WXXL doesn't really get into Gainesville due to slop from WKZY. But 'XL' has always done well in Ocala.

XL actually pulled a 2 share in the last Gainesville book...and everytime I've been there XL comes in loud and clear...I think it will be an issue.....should be interested

I guess Hot AC is the destination per their Arbitron listing:

WKZY-FM
Frequency: 106.9
Station Name: MORE MUSIC BETTER MIX
Format: Hot Adult Contemporary

I wonder if Pamal will do anything with The Buzz (WHHZ 100.5)? Their ratings are even worse than usual.

WKTK took a big leap up to #2 in the Fall ratings just out. I guess it was that Christmas music. I've never understood that theory but it seems to work. I wonder if they'll move a little more toward Hot AC to keep WKZY from moving up?

KTK is as solid as they come. They've been #1 or #2 ever since I worked in the market (1991-93.) It's going to be tough for anyone to compete directly with them.

The only irony is that they're no longer "Koast to Koast", as the call letters signify. That ended when Entercom downgraded the signal, allowing co-owned 98.7/Sarasota to upgrade and cover the Tampa market. Back in the old days, their signal was on a par with WOGK's: Georgia border to Orlando, Gulf to Atlantic.

I listened this morning and no mention of Briton Jon. Leigh Scott and Leeza Gordon were on. Good for Leigh if he is the new morning co-host. Pamal inherited him when they bought 1430/Magic. He was on 1430 during their Hot Talk days and then with Pat Dooley in the morning when 1430 was sports talk. He was on The Buzz from their start I think. He has a great sense of humor so should do a good job.

According to All Access posting under HOT AC Net News today says Briton Jon will be focusing on his morning show, is no longer PD....Matt Derrick is in to be PD/Afternoon drive with an unnamed weekend talent coming in from WAPE.......so I assume Leigh was just filling in.....who knows....

With permission ..Middays/Imagaing/MD will be Kevin McKay, weekends/Swing from WAPE/Cox Jacksonville. He has been at the APE a little over a year now and this station is a good fit.....He is also very sharp with Production/Imaging so the station should sound good as well.....Good luck Kev!
