Galax Blueridge Country

Has anyone listened to Blueridge Country (WBRF) out of Galax? Huge signal and a very different presentation that is directed at the area. Currents in the mornings, Country Classics during the midday, a free for all in the afternoons of mostly old music, and bluegrass at night. The air staff is just OK and the presentation lacks professionalism but think it fits the market. There are lots of good opportunities here but don't think there is anybody in the company that knows how to run the station.

A Class C blowtorch run like a killowatt AM daytimer. Radio guys from Maine to Florida have been lusting after WBRF for decades.

Coulda been, woulda been worth a fortune. When FM sticks were at the peak, they could have sold the SOB for a mountain's worth of money. Now? Oh, they could still cash it out for some decent coin--but... timing is everything. If station values are based on a multiple of cash flow, what does zero times 8/9/10 equal?

Still, "Barf 98" does cover W-S with a listenable signal. Better than most AM signals and better than the smaller local FMs. Could still be a diamond in the rough.

Redneck I agree with you. The stations's signal is really not bad in the Greensboro market and actualy think they could be a player in the market if they had some direction. Seems they are all over the board with their music. The mornings guy (with former has been WTQR Aunt Eloise) play current music then they switch to classic country at 10am. Really not sure what the afternoon drive guy is playing but do hear some really old (I mean really old) country and at 6 they switch to bluegrass. I'd assume their audience is much older than most stations and they have lots of competition in the "country" format. Rumor on the Greensboro boards say they could go Classic Hits and that could give them a huge edge. There are no Classic Hits (to my knowlege) in their coverage area which includes Greensboro.

I used to live with my ex girlfriend in Hillsville, and that was the strongest station in the area.. I mostly listened to the Charllote 95.1 Kiss FM CHR, which comes in quite well in Hillsville Galax considering its 115 miles away. I also liked 96.1 The Beat from Charllote, but I couldnt ever get it passed mount airy or Fancy Gap... I hated Hillsville with a passion, but Galax was a nice little town.. If you live in the area,, What station playing either oldies or classic rock Beats the Crap out of K-92 Roanoke in the Hillsville Galax area?

I had heard that WBRF was having signal problems and have found out they took a huge lighting hit that took out their antennas. Guess they have a new system now and are in the process of making the installation as I write this. Am sure that 10,000 watts did not come close to covering their signal area.
