Galaxy Divorces Arbitron

R&R is reporting that Galaxy is dropping its Arbitron subscription, and Ed Levine has resigned from Arbitron's Radio Advisory Panel. Galaxy stations are signing on with Eastlan Resources, who bill themselves as "The Radio Ratings Alternative".

Read all about it...

It's no secret that Arbitron has been holding a gun to the head of radio stations, and that CC threatened to drop their Arbitron subscription last year until a new agreement was worked out. Does Ed really think that he has the kind of juice that CC has and can make Arbitron blink?

Maybe Ed thinks that Arbitron will respond with an embargo, which will leave his most recent decent numbers as the only available numbers for non-subscribers.

From the Radio & Records article linked above:

Levine said Arbitron's $250,000 annual fee for Galaxy's nine mostly top-rated Syracuse stations represents about 8% of his company's expenses in that market.

I don't know Mr. Levine, but I was surprised to read that his nine Syracuse stations are mostly top-rated? Is that really the case?

I'm sure that would come as a surprise to Clear Channel.

Galaxy's top four were #3, #8, #11 and #13 12+.

Clear Channel's top four: #1, #2, #4 and #6

You make the call! ;)

I guess it depends on what your definition of "top" is...

Go check out Galaxy in Albany....heh...heh...heh....

Help me understand the math here. If the price is $250,000 and that is 8% of revenue, that would make the total revenue for all nine stations $3,200,000 or so. Divide that by 9 stations and that is about $350,000 in ANNUAL revenue for each station. Or about $6,700 a week in revenue. Even if the bottom 5 stations were ignored, that is still only $13,400 a WEEK in revenue for each of those top 4 rated stations. Is that REALLY what they are billing there??? Somebody help me on this math...it doesn't add up.

Arbi-Bonus

I wonder if this means that Ed gets a NEW Jag instead of a used one...
