KGBC is still on, but running China Radio International.
They're still airing this? What a waste.

The checks from the Chinese government don't bounce, in stark contrast to many brokered time clients. ;D

True, but Galveston would be better served by this station being off the air than airing Chinese propaganda.

I'm sure that's what the Chinese are thinking when they air American material over their airwaves.

Get real....

I stand behind what I said and don't see why I am getting bashed for it. KGBC isn't serving Galveston with this programming. They're serving their own pockets. The format from 2008 and 2009 was doing fine and it's a shame to see yet another sellout, and the people affected are those in Galveston who have no local media serving them, save the Daily News. Houston media isn't serving them in that matter, nor should they be expected to.

I suspect some critics of China Radio International haven't listened. While not Galveston-centric, the 'strange and odd' news stories' done by Los Angeles air talent, Steph doing the "Shuffle" an eclectic mix of rock and pop based hits from the 60s through today, the sportstalk, tech news, movie reviews and such are much different than I suspected and should be of some interest to those in Galveston or anywhere here in the USA. Granted, CRI is handled through an American company that gets their checks from China Radio International, the programming, I understand, is consulted by either former BBC employees or the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). I never expected to hear hosts say things like 'democracy is the best form of government that the whole world aspires to' on CRI. In fact, I wondered if the guy would be on the next week, but he was, and is originating his show out of Los Angeles. It's sure not what I expected. And they even do a few rip and read local stories (Houston Metro).

Do I work for KGBC? No. I work at KYND that carries the same programming which is why I know the content so well.

And how did I feel about CRI Programming? I was listening to hear the propaganda too. It's not what I suspected.

In my opinion, it's not much different than the countless radio stations that hook up to a satellite and run a feed. The jocks on the satellite music formats play the safe stuff and talk entertainment news and USA Today with local relegated to inserting commercials.

Since you work for the outfit - where is the CRI on 1580 coming from? Now that 1590 gave up on HD, I can clearly hear CRI on 1580.

I wouldn't call the CRI music format "oldies" when they play music - not when it spans into the 80's. I'm not sure what you would call it, but it is all over the place musically. In some ways, it is the same problem I had with the old KGBC - too broad of a span of decades. It should more narrowly focus its music to one or two decades, and do them well with a minimum of intrusive talk. I would think that 60's and 70's would do very well in Houston, since it does well in Dallas and San Antonio. LA just lost another oldies station, so if the network is out of there they might do well with that focus in areas KRTH doesn't cover well.

If you are hearing CRI on 1580, it is probably a mixing product or image involving KYND 1520 if you are close to their transmitter. I've heard the same thing on my car radio in the parking lot of the Fairfield Outlet Center, which is near KYND. Not heard at my home or other locations.

I have no idea where the 1580 signal is or who has it. I know 1520 KYND and 1560 KGBC in the Houston Metro run CRI but am unaware of any others.

It seems to me many of the programs originate from the Los Angeles area. Those out of China always seem to have an American or a British air Talent among the team, usually is more of a lead role.

You're right, The Shuffle is all over the musical rooad and sidewalk for that matter. You could hear Jack Jones, Johnny Cash abd AC/DC within a couple of hours. Mostly she does a theme for each hour of the show.
