Gambling ads in Clarion-Ledger

We talked earlier about on-air contests that included possible lotteries and such. That it was up to local legal authorities to determine enforcement, etc. Saw an ad in Friday's paper for a car dealer in Brandon that advertised a "raffle". Even used the word. Nothing against the dealer, but seems unfair that the privately-owned,unlicensed newspaper in Jackson doesn't have to abide by the same rules as those of us entrusted with the public airwaves. Gambling advertising is gambling advertising.

I think Landecker was referring to some promotions that have been done recently here in the Jackson area that appear on their face to violate state law in addition to FCC rules. The lawyers will correct me if I'm wrong but I've been told that even if federal law allows something it does not make legal any act otherwise made unlawful by state or municipal statute- states rights and all that jazz...
Until someone cares enough to file a formal complaint the FCC won't do anything. Perhaps you should record some promos and run it by the guys in D.C.
