Game on: Riter/WECK declare war on Entercom

Scott Wilson does a nice job when he shows up to chip in on Brad's show.

I think it's usually around 5 o'clock or so. Must have a day job.

Anyways, why not let him do 7 to 9 p.m. and move Mendola somewhere else, perhaps with Brad?

Or does Brad not want a true co-host?

Yeah, from what I can tell, Scott works for UPS, and then goes to the show. Seems to be about 3 times a week or so. I really think he's funny with Brad, and wouldn't want to mix that up.

The WECK "birthday party" sounds interesting. Who doesn't love to drink alcohol, eat fatty foods and win prizes?

Watch out for the spys from 500 Corporate Parkway. You know they will be lingering...

Or "three-W-s" since that is an automated station that operates out of a broom closet at 500 Corporate Parkway in Amherst.

Is Riter going after Beach, or the Glummer Twins on 'GR? Even he doesn't appear to know the answer. Most of what I've heard from Riter is him bloviating about topics that interest HIM, and not necessarily the listeners. And why should I care what he thinks? What cred has he got? Are there credible guests willing to share their expertise?
That's what's puzzling to me. If there's one time slot where WECK could have a fighting chance, it's afternoons. I'm not a fan of Riter and his soliloquys, but he's the best they've got, and people want an alternative to Schopp/Parker that he's not even trying to provide.

I don't get it. What do you mean he's not even trying to provide? He is the best they've got and goes head to head with S&B.

WECK has many attack promos up now, but none concerning Riter's competition in the afternoon. He used to, but not anymore.

Riter's show is most comparable Shredd & Ragan in that he talks about every random thing. Problem is the fat man thinks he's so interesting, and most of us don't. I don't follow ratings, but I'm pretty sure that's a battle Brad can't come close to winning.

It's too often that I'm driving to work from 3-4, must change Schopp & Parker talking out of their ass about sports, or just having some dopey segment, or taking awkward stupid calls which Schopp just loves being an arrogant jerk with... turn to 1230 and Brad is prattling on endlessly by himself about his personal life or obscure nonsense, which I can't even force myself to listen to.

I'm not saying Brad should be a strict sports show, but he's much MUCH better with a sidekick to keep him in check, and when he has guests. He doesn't seem to like that, however. And now that he's PD, that isn't going to change. It also doesn't help that WECK is so rinky-dink that they won't hire anyone else anyway.

Let me offer a contrarian perspective: Brad Riter might be best scheduled in middays. Put him on against Rush and Rome. Riter's young, aggressive and offers a perspective that is anything but Rush when it comes to news/opinion and is more local than Romey when it comes to sports. Furthermore, Riter is "live and local." Let it rip. Balls out. If he wants to do "All brad, All the Time," go for it. There's nothing to lose and everything to gain. Simulcast on WLVL.

Is it a suicide mission? Perhaps. But a station that's up against two established competitors must seek the competitors' soft spot, slim as it may be. You might argue that to take on Rush and Rome is a fool's mission, but it's the only "local" opening, slim that it may be, that WECK has to break through the line. One good block and the running back picks up 20 yards, a first down. Maybe a TD.

Throughout the day, WECK gets squeezed from both sides, which makes its mission even more difficult. WGR is the pure play sports competitor on one side; WBEN, WNED-AM and WBFO apply the news/info/opinion pressure on the other. In afternoon drive, the competition becomes more intense with Shredd & Ragan soaking up 25-40 year old males.

WECK might do better putting its youngest, most vocal local host on noon to 3 and hammer the local view against its satellite competitors. This being said, this tactic may improve the TSL and AQH share, but do little (save for word of mouth) to help the cume. Just an opinion from this side of the speakers and monitor. Savor the day!

I totally agree that Brad is much better with a sidekick, and Tom was great for him that way. Definitely keeping him in check is a good way of putting it. Like I've said before - he was really good for Brad because he knows a lot about a lot!.......I wouldn't say Brad doesn't like having guests and sidekicks, because he has them a lot - Scott is on almost every day, as are guests.

They just aren't on early. And, by early I mean the 4-5 hour. I don't understand how you can listen to Brad when you're going to work in the 3-4 hour. Brad's show doesn't even start till 4?

I like that idea, Jim. Putting Riter on say 1-4 may be suicide, but it's an alternative at that time which I would certainly listen to. And would be a perfect fit to the "local" theme they have going.

Then put Mendola on from 4-7. He's the anti-Schopp, give him a chance. The lad definitely knows sports. He would need to have a proven voice with him, though. 7-10 for whatever kid, that become irrelevant soon with the Yankees starting anyway.
