To be honest with you, I want to see a woman host these classic game shows and I'm glad CBS asked Lake to do this. I don't know why Mark Goodson, Jack Barry and others didn't give women a chance to host game shows on a full time basis back in the 50s thru the 90s ?radioguy555 said:but the genre hasn't seen a whole lot of success since the 1980s. But it still surprises me that they chose Ricki Lake to host this. Aren't there any former or current hosts who would be better suited to host since this is a flashback to classic game shows?
Arlene Francis, Betty White and Vicky Lawrence hosted game shows prior to 1990. White's and Lawrence's programs were short-lived (although White also substituted for her husband, Allen Ludden, as host of the long-running Password). Arlene Francis was host of Blind Date, a precursor to The Dating Game, for two seasons. And as RadioGuy points out, there have not been a lot of game show host gigs since in the last 20 years or so. Meredith Viera's agent euchered Regis out of the daytime Millionaire job - which by rights should have been his. Jack Barry mostly emceed the game shows he and Dan Enright produced. The old time game show hosts like Bob Barker, Allen Ludden, Bill Cullen, Gene Rayburn, Dick Clark, Gary Moore, Bud Collyer, Hugh Downs, Art Flemming, Steve Allen, Peter Marshall - and Arlene Francis and Betty White - were pros. Ricki Lake is not in the same league. Like most of the current so-called "talent," without TeleprompTers and ear pieces, they are dead.GAMESHOW MARATHON, hosted by Emmy Award-nominee Ricki Lake ("The Ricki Lake Show") and based on the hit U.K. game show "Ant & Dec's Gameshow Marathon," will be broadcast twice weekly for two weeks beginning Wednesday, May 31 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) and Thursday, June 1 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) and the following week Wednesday (6/7) and Thursday (6/8) before settling in to its weekly regularly scheduled Thursday (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) time period on June 15.GAMESHOW MARATHON features six celebrity contestants competing in a weekly elimination-style tournament in which they play different classic game shows each episode including "The Price Is Right," "Let's Make a Deal," "Beat the Clock," "Press Your Luck," "Card Sharks," "Match Game" and "Family Feud." Celebrities participating include Tim Meadows ("Saturday Night Live"), Leslie Nielsen ("Airplane"), Kathy Najimy ("Sister Act"), Lance Bass (N Sync), Paige Davis ("Trading Spaces") and Brande Roderick ("Baywatch"). A champion will be crowned at the end of the competition. In addition, the program will include a viewer participation element whereby they will have a chance to win the celebrity's grand prize each episode through a wireless (text message) trivia game that enters viewers into a sweepstakes. GAMESHOW MARATHON is produced by FremantleMedia North America and Granada Entertainment USA. Cecile Frot-Cruz, Paul Jackson and Stuart Krasnow are executive producers.
What comes up when you google "Betty White"? Is she available? It could happen yet, but it'll most likely be a summer filler on GSN.(no rumour intended, just "Best bet" opinion)pabsungenis said:My game show dream is to one day see Betty White as the host of a revived "Password."
I'm just glad to see a woman host these classic game shows, don't care if she is good or not.fred flintstone said:Arlene Francis, Betty White and Vicky Lawrence hosted game shows prior to 1990.
