Gannett Begins pulling-out of Flagstaff

From Sunday’s Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff:

GANNETT SCALES BACK

In a cost-cutting move that station officials say is related to being placed on the market for sale, Gannett-owned NBC affiliate KNAZ-TV Channel 2 in Flagstaff has dropped its weekend news broadcasts, and two of its anchors are leaving for jobs in Colorado.

John Mizner, general manager for Channel 12 KPNX TV in Phoenix, confirmed its sister station in Flagstaff is up for sale and the changes in programming and staff are necessary to cut costs to attract a buyer.

Both weekday anchor Michelle Mollison and weekend anchor Mike Coneen are taking new jobs in Colorado. KNAZ-TV GM Jerome Parra will become an assistant GM at Channel 12 and commute two days to Phoenix until the sale.

The weekend newscast has been dropped completely. Instead KNAZ will be simulcasting Channel 12 news and using a modified Flagstaff-based weather segment.

The Gannett-owned Arizona Republic is also pulling back its coverage of Flagstaff, with Flagstaff bureau reporter Mark Shaffer confirming he is moving back to Phoenix to cover energy, utilities and telecommunication issues for the Republic's business section.

Any rumors of who might be interested in buying KNAZ-TV?

Also, an unrelated question, assuming you're in Flag - what's the deal on KTFL? Did they go digital-only or shut down altogether?

Thanks.

Anybody know if Gannett plans to build a KPNX translator in Flagstaff after KNAZ is sold? I'd be surprised if a new owner kept Channel 2 as a stand-alone NBC affiliate.

Rumor around KNAZ: Telemundo is interested in Channel 2.

As far as KTFL is concerned, Channel 4 is still off the air... no listing in the most recent phone book... listing has been removed from dexonline. The FamilyNet website lists no Flagstaff affiliate. And the FCC website says they're license has been cancelled---> http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/sta_det.pl?Facility_id=74149).

So the Northern 3rd of the state goes without local television.

As to another Espanol station...I don't Flag, Page and Navajoland want TacoTV

I knew that channel 4 analog was off and the license canceled - I posted that sometime around 7/1 - but their digital construction permit hasn't been canceled. At first I just thought they were going digital-only, but then realized that their DTV channel (and final channel elected after 2009) is 18, but there's a Class A channel 18 broadcasting from Mingus Mtn near Jerome, and they've made no plans to move, so now I wonder if they've shut down altogether.
