Garry Meier Starts 1-4 PM weekdays this Friday on WGN

Just announced on the Chicago Tribune website, in negotiations for some time since the earlier trial runs,
Garry Meier will be on WGN in the afternoon, 1 to 4 PM. Except when the Cubs have a game.

Congrats to Garry on a return to Chicago radio.

Who would have believed years ago that Garry would be on WGN?
Ya never know.

Good for him but he's been "...and Garry" for so many years I wonder how well it'll really work on his own. There's ZERO chance Steve doesn't at least phone in to the 1st show, right?

Heard 20 minutes radio so bad I had to turn it off. He's fostering a fake-anger hot-talk vocal style that sounds a bit dated and used the word 'mope' 3 times (who does he think he is, Ralph Kramden?) I wish him the best and might check on him again in a few weeks to see if he found his legs but right now it doesn't sound like it's for me.

Give him a chance. One show doesn't mean much--especially the first one.

I enjoyed the show.He didn't sound fake to me.Loved it when he blowtorched the Suntime's columnist Lewis Lazare for printing thing's that aren't true. The Suntime's will probably be gone in the not to distant future anyway.

What was Garry thinking when he turned down WLS' offer?

Maybe he was thinking about the money. They've got to be hurting over at the Big 89.

As a lifelong WGN listener (in my early 40's) this decision confuses me to the point where I believe WGN management has decided to change the entire way it approaches both its talent and it's listeners.

It used to reward both groups for loyalty. Now it's punishing us.

Nick D. deserves and earned the spot. He's been a WGN fan his entire life. He's put in 20 years there. He has a very large following and would have been an asset in the afternoons.

Garry Meier has made a career out of ragging on WGN and all it stood for. He's been a WGN hater his entire life. He is boring, OLD and sounds completely dated. Today's hot topic (I tuned in just before Steve came on) was weird cleaning habits. *sigh*

WGN used to cater to a more educated listener. Now it's catering to the lowest common denominator. I'm extremely disappointed. I believe this experiment to get more listeners by 'dumbing down' the programming will fail.

There is maybe a little panic going on there. First of all they've lost their formerly permanent number one position. Consequently they're scrambling for answers. Part of those answers, they think are getting younger listeners. In this case people with names. Also, the Tribune has major problems.

BTW: Isn't it interesting that so many ex WLS jocks work at WGN? ie Steve King, Bob Sirott & Garry?

What he said!!!! Thought they would of went younger and used the 1-4 time spot as a training ground, which they have done in the past. Steve and John both started out there and moved them to other time slots.

I bet WGN pissed off alot of 87 year old folks after giving this wise cracking fool Garry Meier a show, I have heard a few phone calls with test seasoned citizens on Garry's show already.
As a 29 year old person from WI who didnt hear Garry way back in the olden days I have never heard much of him before, I originally wanted Nick D but find Garry to be great. Actually luring away from the old reliable Mark Belling out of Milwaukee.

You mean WGN has listeners as young as 87?

You guys are all "youmg whippersnappers."

YOU should have been around when Bob Collins started - and when HE took over the morning show. Same kind pf complaints. The whole statin WAS very "staid" with 50's flavored dignity and Collins really "loosened it up" with giving people nicknames, playing 50's/60's rock, etc.

WGN is a "generational" station and will always get that. Be grateful they ARE changing to "younger appeal." WGHN is a GREAT radio station..

Heck I remember when Wally Phillips took over for Eddie Hubbard.
