Garry Meier Starts 1-4 PM weekdays this Friday on WGN

I remember when Wally Phillips took over for Eddie Hubbard.

Me too. It was in 1967. I rode the Addison Bus to Gordon Tech, listening to him daily. I was a big fan of his.

The newspaper ads read; "Workers ofthe world ARISE to Wally Phillips. Rest his soul.

WGN is where I first heard "Paralyzed" by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy one sunday morning on the way to church
with parents driving, about 1982. It was a great moment in WGN radio, Grandma and my parents let it play, but were
not really as appreciative as I was. I came across some of my 1976 Saturday night WGN jazz airchecks not too long ago.

WGN knows they have to change, being the first big AM here to dump iboc, and put Garry on, shows they are using their brains about it.

Thanks again for kicking the hash generator into the dumper.

I thought Wally went into mornings in 1965, but my memory could be wrong.

Wally started doing mornings in 1965. I grew up listening to Wally. I love it when people try to tell me that their favorite old host created this and that thing... and I just laugh. It was all Wally. :)

Career Highlights:

* Joined WGN in 1956.
* Morning show host, 1965-1986.
* Also hosted brunch programs from Ditka's Restaurant, a travel show, and, until his retirement in 1998, a Sunday morning program.

WGN may need a change towards youth, but not sure how they get there with a 62 year old washed-up has-been who has openly hated WGN for his entire career.

Just listened to the first 25 minutes of the Garry Meier show.... had to turn it off. It's so far beyond brutal that I can't even listen. Nails on a chalk board, that's what he offers.

Further thought; September, '65 is correct date for Wally. I thought I was a Senior - but I was going into me Sophomore year. Time flies!

Wally was such a staple it actually seems like he was on in the mornings before that.

I met him many times while visiting wgn. He was very nice - even to a goofy 15 year old kid.

If I remember correctly I think Wally hosted a lunchtime show from Eli's right after he left mornings.

I like Garry, and it's good to hear that he's back on the air. However, I still wish that he and Steve Dahl would get back together again.

hey, Chicago! is THIS WGN? is this a Major market talk show? i listened, in amazement to 20 minutes of Gar, playing "hooks" of songs and telling everyone if he liked them or not...now THAT'S entertainment. ???
