Gary Burbank Pre Synonymous Bengal Days :)

Porky was a takeoff on the famous urban jock Porky Chedwick (on CKLW he used the real name for the charachter). Other charachters who Burbank retired before WLW included Thelma Hooch the Breakfast/Dinner Pig, and Bass Ackwards. The Rev. Scaggs had a much greater presence pre-WLW.

"How does this afternoon find you, Mr. Burjank? I happen to be one of the Cincinnati Bengals, who wish to remain synonymous, because what I have to say might besmirch my reparation." Good times.

I was alway a fan of Arnie Barnold, who was a direct takeoff of the beloved Barney Arnold, who was the WHAS Farm Director. Barney's opening line each morning was, "Howdy friends and neighbors, this is Barney Arnold." Barney's word was gold in this area. Here's his picture:

Here's Joe Huber's take on Barney from a Courier Journal interview from Jan. 17, 2008:

If it hadn’t been for Barney Arnold, we would never have made it. He was the farm reporter on WHAS radio. Everybody in the 1960s, all through the seventies, everybody listened to Barney Arnold. He had 90 percent of the listening audience. Bank presidents, everybody listened to Barney Arnold.

So Bonnie and I started this pick-your-own farm seven miles off the Interstate highway out here in the middle of the damn boondocks. Nobody knew we were here. We had no money, so we couldn’t tell them.

So I call up Barney Arnold and I tell him about this concept of pick-your-own and ask him if he would come see my farm, come talk to Bonnie and me and let us tell him about our concept. “Yeah, yeah,” he said, so I said, “When do you think you could come?” “Well, he said, what about this afternoon?”

I said, “Well, I’ve got the most important meeting of my life this afternoon.” I said, “Barney Arnold’s going to come see me.”

We became the best of friends. Every morning, he went on the radio and announced what we were going to pick that day — free of charge! And he did that that whole spring and that whole summer. And Barney Arnold put this place on the map.
Then Jack Crowner of WAVE-TV got in on the act. He got very competitive with Barney Arnold. He came out here and put us on TV about once a month.

I often wondered if the Les Nessman character was another takeoff on Barney.

Here is a clip of audio of Barney Arnold starting at 6:48:

You should compare the actual audio with Burbank's version. It's very close!
