This morning I received the sad news that Gary Diamond, long time radio programmer and Chief Engineer passed away sometime between 1AM and 2AM Sunday morning. He was 62. I had the pleasure of meeting Gary for the first time 31 years ago at what was KRKE AM & FM in Albuquerque. Always quick with a joke (most of which were either very crass or down right obscene) and also quick to wanting things done right and done better than the guys down the street, Gary was a true professional, wanting the stations he engineered to be a success. He will be missed.

62 I thought he was older.

Here's Gary's obit from the Albuquerque Journal, published Sunday:

DIAMOND -- Gary Lyle Diamond, 62, passed away after a long illness. His father, Lyle, and his mother, Jeanette, passed away in the '70's. Gary leaves behind many long time friends. Gary had a long, distinguished career in broadcasting on Albuquerque radio and television. He began his on-air career as the youngest person to receive a Ham radio license in New Mexico. Gary went on to become a disk jockey for KARA, KQEO, and other radio stations in Albuquerque. His real love was for the technical side of broadcasting. He was an engineer for Channel 7 and KRKE. He achieved his lifelong dream by becoming chief engineer for KOB. Gary earned the respect of his colleagues through his comprehensive technical knowledge as well as his broad knowledge of musical artists in all genres. He was a member of the Society of Radio Engineers and the Upper Rio FM Society, an organization dedicated to promoting amateur radio. In addition to his radio interests, Gary was a licensed pilot and a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn. Gary graduated from Del Norte HS in 1966 and from UNM in 1971. A memorial for Gary will be held at The First Unitarian Church in Albuquerque, 3701 Carlisle Blvd NE, on February 5, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. No flowers, please. Make donations to National Kidney Foundation or American Diabetes Association.
