GARY IN THE MORNING

reptimania said:
forgive my ignorance.. but ... who is gary smith??

Gary was the morning man for 17 years (?) at Stroudsburg's WSBG. During the Imus flap (Imus was morning man at New York's WFAN for...a long time) Gary used 'nappy-headed hos' in an on-air contest. Showing a stunning lack of backbone, management at WSBG reacted to criticism of the use of the phrase by firing Gary.

The resulting outcry making the original 'protest' seem meek in comparison, WSBG suffered a drastic defection in advertisers who supported Gary...and had for the better part of two decades.

By Gary moving his show nationally by streaming on the Internet, the Pocono region (and Gary) will feel a certain vindication over an event that should never have happened.

Bravo for him.

Gary is a household name in Stroudsburg and the Pocono Region...so it's a chance for real Gary fans and soon others to find & follow....and soon they can do it in their cars and on their PHONES

at the end of the day- IT'S ALL ABOUT CONTENT

If Imus ends up on WVPO, (I heard he might), do you think they'll "forgive" Gary and let him have his morning show back?? It would only be fair....all he was doing was joking about what happened....A big fat DUH to Nassau. :p

Imus is back on WVPO. Gary was not invited (more like begged) to return to WSBG. So it seems that Nassau took advantage of the 'outrage' by minorities in the community (there were about five) to sack Gary. To add insult to injury, Nassau then slaps the minorities in the face by bringing back Imus...who was the cause of the whole affair and used the term in relation to ACTUAL PEOPLE as opposed to Gary's use of the term in a contest.

Pretty convoluted way to save a few bucks, but typical if you've been following the Nassau trainwreck for any amount of time.

That is true, $$$ is always the reason! I guess Nassau will just hide behind this Imus issue with Gary....even though they're being hypocrites by bringing Imus back on the air at VPO!! I'm sure more people will notice this....I'm wondering if they just had a plan to fire him anyway, since the station flipped formats shortly after....and that was their perfect excuse!

I'm not sure Gary would "fit" with a morning show on a lite station..BUT..it could possibly work on "The Bone", or even the Hawk....?

Well since the Bone or Hawk are Nassau owned, don't see that happening. But stick him on mornings at AEB-FM or even LEV, and I bet you he would make a pretty good go at it, I'm sure he'll wind up somewhere. I think his idea of doing www.garyinthemorning.com is pretty good, I checked the site, looks clean and professional and he even has sponsors!
Personally I think internet radio is an idea thats about to explode, the overhead is so much less than a full blown commercial terrestrial operation, and enough people now have Broadband to make it fly. When the Wi-Fi revolution takes off w/ your cars and other portable devices, there will be alot of demand for content, so probably a good idea to get in on the ground floor for him. I wish him (and anyone else in the internet broadcasting field) Good Luck!

well, I was curious, so I checked it out (like every web link you guys post) and was pleasantly surprised. Audio quality of the stream sounds great. He even has sponsors, which I guess is a great start for an Internet stream... Interesting, will keep an eye on this site.
Granted, its a 5 minute message, and it appears to be a test stream, but should be interesting to see if a Radio Morninhg jock can pull it off on the internet. Best of luck though to Gary. Link to stream is below to check out for yourselves and discuss...
