Gary Jeff Walker Up In The Air About Being On The Air

So what was behind Gary Jeff Walker's comments this morning (Saturday, January 10, 2009) saying it "could be his last show" on WLW-AM? It wasn't a joke. Really. Not one of those WLW getting supsended by Helen Mays stunts that Cunningham pulls every time he goes on vacation.

Here's the deal: Walker, 48, is one of three full-time WOFX-FM (FOX 92.5) staffers considered part of the intellectual prpoerty of the station being sold by Clear Channel to Cumulus. He interviewed with TJ Holland at Cumulus (WARM98, WGRR, 96ROCK) on Tuesday, and maybe as soon as a week Clear Channel's FOX and Radio 94.1 will be moving into the Cumulus studios downtown.

I don't know if I'd have done the "maybe last show" thing (twice now) but I do enjoy Gary Jeff on Saturdays and hope he can stick around.

based on what i heard on bubba the love sponge's show today on sirius, i'd take the cumulus deal regardless. word was cc managers were given flash drives with their new budgets on it and a set date to make the cuts on said flash drive.

I don't know that there's an offer from Cumulus on the table. Much has been said about CC layoffs. Will WLW continue to be spared?

My guess is that yes as far as on air talent goes.

From what Bubba was saying, it comes down to cost-benefit analysis and whether you are a money maker or breaker for the company.

Seg is probably safe, Willie is safe, Eddie & Tracey probably are, Jim Scott could be a different story. Unless Sloan is making large dollars he is probably safe, just guessing on all those. Sales will probably be hit the hardest as well as traffic announcers, producers, etc. My guess is that Kiss, EBN & Homer will take the biggest hits.

What about Randy Furman??

Kiss is almost barren already if any staffers, Homer has what these days Cutler, Eggers and McCallister, and EBN might have the most to spare other than LW, KRC has just the morning people and producers i believe. the weekend shows are time bought i believe

For some reason I have a sneaking suspicion that CC will get rid of Mo Egger and put Dan Patrick on in his slot. For a market this size, we have a lot of local sports talk, and I don't know how much longer that will last.

A Mo Egger loss would truly be a shame. You won't find a guy his age with a better spirit. Mo reminsds me of kids in radio 30 years ago - insatiable appetite for learning the industry and improving himself. He's smart, quick and funny. He understands that radio is entertainment, not education. My fingers are crossed for Mo.

It's Eric Deters this Saturday morning.

It occurs to me that hiring Clear Channel is using the hiring model perfected by F1 racing; a driver has to bring along sponsorship and/or family money in order to get a seat. Deters comes complete with both.

Sloan has been on for seven years, but he very well could stay, but Jim Scott, with his boring schtick of B-D list celebrities (Lee Trevino and Spike Feresten of FOX late night Friday), and correspondent interviews, may go.

They could very well move Eddie and Tracy to the morning drive, put Sloan or Billy in afternoons, and air Deters (an attorney) 9-midnight, and mix him with perhaps Sterling.

I miss Gary Jeff--- Liked him on wlw really liked him on the fox. A true talent-- and the king of voicetracking. Hope they DO pick you up GJW!

Tom Taylor's report on Radio-Info indicated that GJW did not have an offer from Cumulus, and that they have indeed officially taken over 92.5 and 94.1. Taylor also reports Bob and Tom will remain on n92.5.

Gary Jeff was back on the Big One this morning. Sorry, the bulldog and whoever the guy was last week didn't do anything for me. The Saturday morning gig is apparently the only one GJW currently has.

I'm really glad to hear GJW,,,hope he gets another full time gig somewhere in town.
One quick note to ClearChannel,,,, If the lawyers in the greater Cincinnati area need to attend some "continuing legal education" they will tune in to C-SPAN-2 NOT 700WLW!
"Bulldog" movie reveiws and talking to hot girls is fine... but Eric Deters.ESQ discussing tort reform with lesser known tax attorneys has me quickily tuning into Ken Anderson (as if thats much better?)

Has Eric Deters ever seen a movie he didn't think was great?
