Gary Lewis's Standard Response to Emails...

Gary is sending out a standard email to anyone emailing about 99x.

Not on your life! It is in fact based solely on our respect for and belief in 99X that we have the courage to have 99X blaze new trails into the internet and HD in the same way similarly adventurous stations did likewise when AM was all there was and FM was a pipedream. And just like when there was only AM in cars and transistor radios, we’ll be getting out info on all the gadgets out now and coming out soon that will allow 99X to be taken with you, and not just heard on your PC. We believe there is a huge audience for Alternative music, and are such firm believers in it that we are returning 99X to a true, adventurous Atlernative station. 99X will continue to live in the real world as we put on Big Day Out, Mistletoe Jam, the Unplugged in the Park concert series, and the other great concerts and events the station has become rightly famous for (and without revealing too much, you won’t be without a lot of the other things you mentioned you want). We will offer the same sense of discovery that 99X did when it was first launched, and reinvent with way it’s done with Visual Radio. This is the best tribute we can pay, and the most appropriate way for 99X to carry on, rather than to live in the past and become just another mainstream radio station. We have nothing but admiration and gratitude for Leslie and Steve and what they accomplished, but this next chapter of 99X needs to be undertaken with a fresh set of eyes, ears, and visions.

It’s going to be quite a ride, and I hope you’ll come along. By the way, that new station on 100.5 that we’ll be launching soon just might do some things you like from time to time as well…"

I spoke with Gary and I wasn't too happy with him coping and pasting this email to everyone who responds to him.
He did clear up several issues. The 99x programming will still be inplace like Organic X... it will take a week or so to get it all together.

Do we know inside Cumulus Atlanta how many staffers will be involved in the 99x brand going forward?

>> Big Day Out, Mistletoe Jam, the Unplugged in the Park concert series

As an HD and internet delivered only brand, will they actually be able to promote these events?

Is 99x being relegated from it's former studio to a closet?

First I would expect them to promote these events also over their terestrial sister stations. Even further I think you could see some co-branding with Rock 100.5 especially depending on how it skews. I can see 99x.com/Rock100.5's Big Day Out.

Well Matt Jones will still be doing Unplugged in the Park.. I am sure they are going to be advertising for 99x.com on both 99.7 and 100.5.

and that is great Gary, but 99x.com still isn't 99X
While I never was a full time listener, having worked the 99X "Downtown Rocks" concerts back in 2005 and other events in the past (as an EMS communications director), I can say that the energy that was 99X cannot be duplicated. Internet radio has it's own type of niche (such as Kickradio.nl) but let's be real, there aren't going to be live shows with the feeling of people behind the music coming from some PC running in a closet with Winamp or ZaraRadio running on shuffle. The people are what made 99X what it was, and Cumulus has pretty much flushed them down the toilet for the most part, as all corporate scumbags have done to trash any decent original local sounding radio, 99X will be history in a few hours. I am recording their last few moments so one day I can play them for my kids and say "see, something of substance did once come out of those antiques in the corner" much the way my parents bought me tapes of 30's and 40's radio shows when I was a kid growing up in the 1980's.

I can't wait to see what dribble comes oozing out of my GE Great Awakening in a few hours on 100.5. Let me guess, another f-ing country station, more hip-hop or worse yet some fetid God squad crap. I'm done with radio in this town: seriously. Even Dave FM is starting to be a stale as out of date diet Coke. No wonder Ipods are selling so well...
