Gary Shelton Exits 98.7 The Fan

I wonder what summer sports play-by-play WHFS AM/FM will obtain. They need something not just local talk and satellite programming. I wonder if the NY Yankees broadcasts will get picked up by 820 or will 1010 get it. ESPN MLB games on radio and Rays baseball on WDAE, maybe the only baseball games heard in Tampa Bay area on the radio for this season. It will be a long summer for two all-sports station without any baseball broadcasts.

Don't be surprised if some ESPN MLB ends up on 1250 as they've been running some weekend programming from the World Wide Leader

I guess no more ad in Tampa Bay Times in the Sunday sports section for Gary & Commish show. Gary ought to fill in for either Tom Jones or Rick Stroud on WDAE on morning drive. I am sure he has some choice words about his former station. There Gary would have to worry about his ratings.

Why would DAE waste their time telling their listeners about a station the majority of them have never heard of just to make Shelton feel better? Stupid.

Shelton doesn't strike me as someone who would do something like that on another station. He's one of the best columnists in the country and this (mis)adventure is nothing more than a sidelight.

1010 used to carry Yankee games back in the day, and even the New York-based "Mike [Francesa] and the Mad Dog" show in afternoon drive, as well.

Please. Since the Magic entered the league they've been on every sports radio station in this town, and some that were'nt, at least three times. In fact, the second worst team in the league has some games aired on 1010 this month.

This isn't an NBA town, heck USF hoops, the worst in the Big Least didn't draw numbers.

Oh. I'm not from the Tampa area. I didn't know this.

I saw at Steinbrenner Field a WHBO 1040 banner promoting a Thursday night 2 for 1 drinks for Tampa Yankees. Maybe 1040 or 820 owned by Genesis will broadcast Yankees game this season. That still a possibility that 1010 will have to wait until next fall until they can broadcast USF football, and Dial Global Sports.

Gary Shelton is a classy guy but he will take a shot anyone if he thinks the moment calls for it.

If CBS Radio does not get back New York Yankees broadcasts. the one sports team I would suggest for summer play-by-play would Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer of the NASL. They are a recognized name and have a long tradition in the market since the 1970's. In addition, don't be surprised if they move up soon to the MLS, the top tier of American soccer.

I'm as big a soccer fan as anyone in the market -- loved the Rowdies during their heyday and attended all of the games -- but there's no chance MLS will be adding them anytime soon. Tampa Bay and Miami already had MLS franchises and the league folded the teams back in 2001. And, MLS is on record saying they have interest in an Orlando franchise if it ever returns to Florida. As much as I'd love to see the Rowdies a part of MLS, to bring back the NASL's glory days, I wouldn't wager the farm on this happening.

To bring the topic back to radio, I'm not sure crowds of 3,500 at Al Lang Stadium translate to a meaningful radio audience. I suspect that most of the fans of the current-era Rowdies are already at the game. Of course, there's the philosophy that a station like 1010 has nothing to lose by broadcasting a local team's games, but I don't think they would want to be associated with a second-tier league. (Again, I'll add ... I like the Rowdies, always have.)

Just some thoughts.

What the hell does "who will broadcast the Yankees" have to do with Shelton leaving CBS Radio?

Like many threads, the subjects evolve or devolve into other topics of a related nature. This usually happens when all relevant thoughts regarding the original post have been shared. Translation: He contributed so little, it didn't take long for this to happen.....

Technically, they never lost the broadcasts: WCBS-AM in New York has been the hub of the "Yankees Radio Network" for over a decade.

Yes, I meant Tampa. I am still wondering what WHFS is going to do differently to get people to listen.

They aren't doing as badly as you think. Their cume is 2/3 of DAE's, so the issue is that people are not staying as long as they do with 620. Play-by-play helps that, but also getting people used to the hosts and their opinions takes time.

Putting Jim Rome on FM was also smart, he had numbers on 620 and Fox's replacement, Jay Mohr, is to sports radio what David Lee Roth was to FM talk. Rome's move to 98.7 probably also explains 1010's drop to zero.

I'll tell you what. I like Gottlieb. That's probably easy to say this time of year with the NCAA Tournament going on, but I have always liked him. I wish he was on noon-3 since I could care less about Mohr or Rome's shows.

I agree I like Doug Gottlieb on 1010. He has a good knowledge of sports especially basketball since he was a former college and pro player. I like Chris Moore who comes on after Gottlieb. Jody MacDonald on the weekends is good and Peter Schwartz is very good on the overnight updates. I guess not enough people know about CBS Sports Radio except for the Jim Rome and Ferrell on the Bench.
