Gates Executive

I have enjoyed reading this thread about the old Gates snow plow consoles. I can only add that one should be careful about changing the VU meter illumination bulbs. These #47 bulbs went into a bayonet socket that was clipped onto the top of the meter under a piece of aluminum trim. One of my earliest CE jobs was at WMFR in High Point, NC. After we went off the air at midnight Sunday night for maintenance, I decided to replace these bulbs and one of the lamp holders (when unclipped from the VU meters) drooped over and brushed against the aluminum snow plow front... a tiny spark and the whole board went dead. I had blown up the PSU. Of course no manual was to be found and the Harris Tech support in the middle of the night was slow in finding a schematic. The Harris guy said it's on microfilm in the next building. It was around 3AM before I heard from him again and he proceeded to help troubleshoot with me probing away with my VOM. We determined that a blown germanium diode was the likely culprit. Of course there were no diodes like this anywhere in the shop and I had to get the board up and running by 5AM when the station was expected to sign back on Monday morning. I went through every office in the building looking for a cheap transistor radio to scavenge. The only one was some golf ball shaped AM radio on the GM's desk... It sacrificed its life to get the board up and running just as the morning guy showed up to sign on..

Might I suggest powering down the board first? That sounds like electronics 101 to me.

Hi there!

I'm building out a broadcast studio in Los Angeles. I intend to make it period correct for 1960s (equipment, sound proofing, etc.). Just bought the heart of my studio, a Gates Executive. Just came out of service a few years back, so she's in great shape. That said, I need to source a few cosmetic pieces such as knobs. If anyone knows where I can source parts and also where I might find a couple Gates turntables, reel to reel, mics, headphones, etc, I'd REALLY appreciate it!

My Email is [email protected]

Thanks!

Brian
