Gator Country No Longer!!! & KOOL FM

M

Guest
It sounds like some one came and told Renda to stop using Gator as their logo in Jacksonville. What in the heck has happened. The format is still country but the monkier is gone and I liked it.

I also do not think that anyone really cares what they call the station just as long as they play country music and do it better than the other stations and that is what they are doing.

Now I just want to know who told Renda to stop using Gator as their monkier. If its UF than shame on them beacuse the station is not even in their market. If it is the Gator Bowl than their might be a reason and Renda was smart to listnen and not face any legal action. Hopefully they will relaunch soon with a new monkier.

For KOOL FM: Tom Murphy sounds great and glad to hear that he is back on the air waves. Smart purchase for Renda. KOOL is now going in the right direction. Look for 100.7 to have its highest ratings ever come by the end of the year.

This is "Jaguar 1320" all over again. They can go back to Froggy and do the same as before. Or they could turn this mess into a listener contest:

"As you've probably noticed, we're having a bit of trouble coming up with a catchy name for 99.9, Jacksonville's NEW country station.

First we named ourselves after a small amphibian [ribbit sfx] but some folks confused us with the little guy in the car insurance commercials! Then we picked a large, scaly reptile that lives in a swamp [alligator sfx] but certain football fans turned us off in disgust!

So, since we want 99.9 to be YOUR home for country music in Jacksonville, why don't we let YOU pick a name for our new station? Send us your pick and see complete rules at [new web address]. If we select your entry, we'll pay you 999 dollars! That's [new web address].

No green animals, please."

The last time I can remember a "name the station" stunt in this market was when WAPE-AM became WPDQ. Either there were some "smart" listeners sending in postcards, or the whole thing was a fix! haha

djtommyr,

I like this idea. You are thinking smart and straight. Now just one sugguestion to do with this. Take the idea and email it to Bill Scull at Renda Broadcasting and to Jeff Davis the PD. It all makes logic sense. Email: [email protected]

Here is a few names I will throw out to name the station:

-Coast Country
-Jax Country
-Deer Country
-Hawk Country
-Rockin' Country
-Kix Country
-Kicks Country
-Kickin Country

Just a few ideas to throw around. I know their will be talk about this one.

"duh" of the day

If it is indeed U.F., they have every right to protect their franchise.

Shame on Renda for not doing their homework.

Re: "duh" of the day

No. Wrong!!

U.F. is in a total different market than Jacksonville. 99.9 now is a fringe station in that market. The gator for the station did not even look like the one for U.F.

How about "No to Country and Hello to Something Else"?

Why didn't Renda show some real creativity? Jax doesn't need a third 100kw country station.

The bottom line is that CC produced a cease and desist order Monday night that said the WGNE could no longer use Gator country. It is now in the hands of the lawyers. My feeling is call it 99.9 the Gator. It still has the same branding effect and CC can't do a thing about it. hopefully tony Renda will go with that idea. Thne they won't have to make a lot of changes to logos etc.

Where does CC get off doing this? This is stupid. CC is going to lose. THis battle with Renda.

Now this would be funny:

The lawyers tell CC to flip Rooster or QIK to a different format. Renda will prove that CC controling one format in a market for a long time is not smart.

We will see.

99.9 is not a 100kw station. It is a 48kw but better in how strong it is. Before you say something know the facts about the station.

The point is all 3 country signals are strong, as opposed to the many B-grade signals and those that don't cover the city limits on all 4 sides.

Bottom line, IMO, is Renda seems to have a "cut me a slice of that pie" programming philosophy, as evidenced by Arrow, especially in its later years.

There's nothing wrong with that if they can have enough of the pie to sustain themselves. It's just a bummer for the hardcore radio fans like us if the format does not stand out from the competition.

Could Renda make more money with 99.9 if they had tried a different format? Who knows? It was safer to do country, and if it picks up enough listeners to attract national sales, good for them.

CC has sat on their hands to long with the country format and one thing Renda knows is the country format. In Ft. Myers they took on 2 CC country stations and one flipped and Renda is now beating the other one.

Just give it time

You're right--they are not a full C1 which are usually 100kw or the equivalent with taller tower. The point being they took the easy way out and didn't offer programming that isn't already over-served. Not the first time a staion goes for the cheap and familiar rather than take a risk. Of course, it's their money and their risk!

This is almost as funny as CC flipping their oldies outlet in Orlando with the new name of the station translated in English: Cumming. Somebody at Renda should've caught this. Ready. Fire. Aim.

"duh" of the day

Doesn't matter- Gainesville is in the Jacksonville trading and marketing area.
Close enuff (of course, we're assuming that U.F. is who's raised the stink).

Hey, since we are throwing out monikers for public consumption and thread humiliation, how about "99.9 GENE FM". Kinda of a take off on the Jack phenomenon while incorporating a slick bend of the call letters WGNE. Goofy, but what isn't in radio these days?

It simple. CC uses the moniker gator country on 930 The Fox. That is where all this came from

When I read the first post, I imagined the late game show announcer Gene Wood doing radio imaging. "The passwuud is Gatuur."

But I love 99.9 GeNiE-FM...Your wish is our command! [ducking]
