As Barry Horn noted a fortnight back, no market has 3 successful sports stations. So that's strike 1. And while yes, the Fan COULD overtake KTCK and KESN, it's a very uphill climb. So while he's turned around other stations, will he be able to overtake these two particular stations. So what is he up against?
KTCK- #1 in men 25-54, a player in persons 25-54, one of the highest billers in the market, a Marconi winner, and at 15 years in the same format, pretty much a 'heritage' station in this market. I don't know any serious radio observer that doesn't at least respect that station. A lot of people don't like their brand of sports (guy talk) but I think we should all respect their results.
KESN- Consistently has a decent showing M25-54 with a crappy FM signal. A good mix of the national (M&M) with local, including one of 2 REAL heritage sports talk hosts (Galloway) in the market. A station that outcumes the Ticket many books, just doesn't have the TSL that KTCK has. But aside from all that- they are an affiliate of 'the worldwide leader in sports'. They're not going anywhere. Probably ever.
So not only does he have an uphill climb, most people don't like they way he seems to be going about it. the problem with caller driven sportstalk is that if your callers suck, you suck. Add in hosts who aren't necessarily strong radio hosts (Ben Rogers was selling TV time this time a year ago, Newey was doing TV, Greg Hill was doing God knows what and Dan O'Malley was what, one of Russ's sidekicks?) and you don't necessarily have the talent to overcome bad calls.
Then their crappy imaging. If you're going to image as 'the sports station for sports fans", why are you giving me manliest man brackets? Or hot chick talk, or whatever guy talk segment they are on that day. It's VERY mixed message.
