GEN X flipping maybe?

Last time Tulsa had four country stations K95 was dominant with 98.5 mainstream, 99.5 younger thrust and 103.3, KTFX, pretty mainstream. Fifth, honestly, with KVOO-AM. At this point K95 and 98.5 are solid, well established 99.5 has a solid share with Classic every book. This will be a tough fight for CC, given the established country stations [all three do what they do very well], the signal probs 106.1 has always had and the marketing they will likely not put into it. Unless they wanna make a full run with jocks, promotions, etc...might as well plug a syndicated morning show in.

The only logic I can see to this is, perhaps, "divide & conquer." If 106.1 can take away even .8 of K95's audience, that could bump KMOD up to #2 (if numbers stayed identical for the next book which of course they won't... but you get the idea).

I know Gen-X wasn't much of a threat to anybody, but who do you see benefiting from them dropping the format: Mix 96? K-Hits? The Sound? Bob-FM?

I wish them well... I'm all-for a good format fight... but I'm not holding my breath for The Twister to do any real damage. Time will certainly tell.

Gen-X was a gimmick format, I can't imagine that it was ever anyone's favorite station. In that sense, I don't think that anyone really benefits from it's demise.

I think K-95 is in trouble. They need to start programming ALOT more new country if they're going to turn things back around. Not that anyone is going to go over to 106.1 in droves....

I liked the Boss Radio format better than the Twister. Note to self; if you run audio from a movie, make sure you remember to edit out the profanity. Cool idea to play audio from the movie TWISTER, but there was a ton of profanity. Somebody wasn't thinking today. Maybe the FCC will get the air check?

Update-one of the producers at channel 8 has the audio from the TWISTER stunt. I guess he remembered that the movie had profanity, so he recorded it. Has the RDS and time stamp.

it is just another crappy Country Ststion playing the same old crap every hour!! They sound like everyone else. Nothing to set them apart.

Heard some years ago if 106.1 would reduce power they could move in closer to improve metro signal coverage. Beyond the metro 6 counties not much matter. Coweta should do that deal. That still accurate?

Don't think K95 is in any form or shape of any trouble. Had a bad [for them] fall book and rebounded big time in the winter. Rumors of their death have been greatly exaggerated...for about 25 years...largely clueless new challengers who have no idea why they are where they are and have neither the brains nor resources to make a real run over the long haul. KVOO is as good as they've been ever...they make it interesting. Twister may shave a little bit off of 95 and 98 but in the scheme of country now, that format cannot win the market.

Ok here's my review of the Twister. First from my wife I made her listen on the 4th as we were driving around (she hates country). My wife who is a rock music fan and is the perfect demo a female in her mid 30's with a little extra money in her pocket. She listened to Gen-X sometimes and she told me that the Twister was the best country station she has ever listened to. She likes how all the songs seem to be upbeat and even said she would listen to a station like the Twister more then Gen-X she said they played the same song's over and over. I was shocked there is a country station she does not hate! Now my review first I know there is a backlash to the flip that always happen's but with the internet they can be louder but I would not worry about them they forget fast and move on. I'm hearing that they will have a local morning show and some local djs IF that is the case they have a good shot. To make a good run at the other country station's in the market I think some small changes will help. First they are a new country station who plays only newer country songs that is going to be a problem people wants to hear some old songs on a station they listen to all the time. So what do they do? They do an all 90's block like a 90's drive at 5 and play the songs nobody plays anymore and you get a company to sponsor it. That would be a very easy sell! They also need to advertise a lot let people know they are out I thank a 60 day advertise blits would be about right. I would also change the slogan "Oklahoma's Best New County" nobody cares. You need a brand (it's also easer to sell and advertise) Something like (106.1 the Twister Oklahoma's New Brand Of Country!!) people remember brands and that's what they are selling. Anyway's I could go on and on but I think they have a shot with a little change. I was in sells and I could sell the hell out of this. So it's a good start we will just have to wait and see what happens. I just say don't count them out just yet.

Let's remember that the country genre offeres several varieties (just like pop music).

K-95... Currents and recurrents. 90's and now.

KVOO is more of an AC version of country, I think.

Big Country, of course, is classic.

The Twister seems to have very few recurrents and the ones they do play are from the past year or two. New country.

I've been told that CC is very serious about this working. Not only are they improving metro signal coverage, but they're putting up billboards and working on TV ads. The promos and liners sound very youthful and energetic. They're going to tell us that K-95 is the country station your parents listen to. Like someone else said, the music seems to be more upbeat and energetic.

I don't know, it just takes me back to '94 when CC flipped Kool 102 in OKC to (ironically) The Twister. People said they couldn't compete with KXY, and they couldn't be more wrong. It didn't take too long for them to overtake KXY, and now that station is a classic outlet. History might repeat itself with the numbers Jake FM has been putting up, but that's a different discussion.

I'm not saying 106.1 is going to kill K-95, but Cox needs to be worried and not be complacent.

I completely disagree. Listen to K-95 for an hour. Guaranteed you will hear several songs from the 90's. Listen to 106.1 for an hour and tell me if you hear a song from before 2009. THAT is what sets them apart. They also come across as more energetic.

The fact of the matter is, Gen-X was putting up horrendous numbers. CC won't put up with that (unless it's a Hispanic format).

Maybe Tulsa has too many country stations, but I think it's a bold move by CC to throw their hat into the country ring and see who's still standing at the end.
