gen-x radio comes to kansas city

Compared to Clear Channel's Gen-X format (Louisville, Columbus, Albany, GA, etc.), they are playing much newer material - I saw OAR's "Shattered" and Gavin DeGraw's "In Love with a Girl" in their playlist.

Yep back to Hot AC as The Point. It will replace longtime AC KDULL lol. :'( Actually KUDL very sad after being on the air for 32 years. KMBZ will take over 98.1 and contiune on 980AM

I used to call 98.1 K-Dul, too, when I lived in KC. I got more exposure to that station than I wanted since it was my ex's favorite station. However, she'd flip to Q-104 as soon as Delilah came on at night!

By the way, KUDL has actually been on-the-air for 52 years. The KUDL calls are the only calls 98.1 has had since it signed on in '59. It just wasn't an AC until '78 or '79. I know it ran progressive rock in the mid-70's while the AM on 1380 did a top-40 format not too unlike what the industry calls Hot AC today.

Yeah its sad KC doesnt have a AC station anymore. Even though those stations are not in my demo I perfer Star 102. More upbeat music right until they sold the station to Wilks and picked up John Tesh radio show. I guess if you wanna hear AC music KMAJ in Topeka if you have a good radio or you live on the Kansas side. KMAJ came in perfect when I use to live in Priaire Village KS. KKJO in St. Joseph would be next since KLZR in Topeka is actually Hot AC. Maybe KMJK will get a increase or KCJK but more than likely since they are woman stations KCHZ and KMXV. But my money is on KCMO FM

KCMO-FM isn't likely to make too many changes. It's already one of the top-3 stations, and it's become an even stronger 25-54 player since it dropped most of the 60's to become a 70's-centered playlist in '06. I do agree, though, that Cumulus, if anyone, is the most likely to make a move on picking up the AC format. However, I think they'll either kill Jack or 103.7 The Dam.

KMAJ used to always put in a really good signal to my old house in Shawnee. I could get it on my clock radio in my bedroom, and a couple of the girls I worked with would listen to it at work at the office in Lenexa. I don't know, however, if it's a viable Kansas City station. By the way, when I first moved to Shawnee in '97, KMAJ was almost a CHR at night. It ended up picking up Delilah and just sounding like another AC by the summer of '98. I could actually get Delilah on 3 stations at that time because I also could pick up KESY 97.7 out of Omaha. My ex was an AC listener and might have liked that nighttime format on KMAJ, but she never tuned north of Q-104. Besides, I'm thinking KMAJ was already running Delilah at night after she finished her extra semester of college to join me. She also liked 102.1 The Zone and would tolerate Mix and KFKF.

103.7 is just a translator so I doubt it would flip. Jack has good numbers but I hate to say it Magic might flip. I been out of the market for 5 years I remeber KMJK ratings were moving up and KPRS started to slip behind KCFX and KCMO FM. KMAJ was in the process of trying to move closer to Kansas City but it never happen after 2 attemps. Im sure the Point will somewhat grow and have a loyal listener base. This the same thing Clear Channel did in Detroit. They took longtime AC WNIC and turned it into Fresh 100.3 with a Hot AC sound and a few 80's and 90's mix in

I don't have access to demographic numbers, but overall, KMJK is around a 4.0 and KCJK closer to 3.0. But I think Jack, an '80s-'00s classic hits station, complements and protects KCMO-FM, a '70s-'80s classic hits station better than an A/C station would. The Dam serves it purpose, taking away just enough from KQRC to put KCFX at the top. Magic siphons from KPRS. A healthy portion of the A/C audience has gone to the K-Love repeater.
