Gen X Sound

Seems to sound better these days - I hear more variety... although, I think it's about time they update their imaging. The Louisville station's imaging sounds amazing and almost like a CHR station catered to adults. Laura and Tony, when you guys gonna update it1!? WNCI has a new imager everyday! Although, that's probably due to Cage and the fact that Chasecuts comes in handy!

Agree they sound great.  They've done a bang-up job with Gen-X, and it just keeps getting better.

All the more reason it's always so frustrating to see them limit their ratings  to maybe at best 2/3 of what they could attain if they made the no-brainer move to 93.3.  It would be such a good move for both CC and Columbus-market listeners, especially considering 93.3's never-ending under-performance (except at Christmas) with 1000 attempted variations of duplicative me-too AC formats .  And yes, I know I've said it 93 times, but I can't pass up any opportunity to hammer what should be obvious here.

Why can't they jock for a retro hits stations. I mean...all this is an ipod hooked up to a tansmitter. No specialty shows. No nothing. Plain jane bull crap non-radio. Who programs this?

True, but the 106.7 frequency isn't too bad. It can be picked up pretty well both going north and south.

Are you referring to traveling away from Columbus?   As I've discussed (quite a bit  ;)) in some other recent threads, 106.7's  problems tend to be in areas like N. High from the Short North all the way to north of Morse.  It varies by day, but it's a lot worse there than, say, right by the Dispatch towers or 20 miles West of Columbus.  93.3's signal is usually flawless anywhere in the metro I've traveled.  I also gave the example of a Crosswoods (270 at 23) 3rd floor hotel room where I had to keep re-adjusting the antenna to try to pick up 106.7 without some noise-- even though 106.7's transmitter isn't far from there --  while 93.3 came booming in perfectly no matter how the antenna was positioned.

106.7: 7300 watts, 591 feet -- not much better than some class A's
93.3: 32,000 watts, 617 feet

Obviously a BIG difference in potential reach and susceptibility to interference.  An excellent signal (93.3) is the key to much improved reach/ratings over "not too bad" (106.7).

I'd just dump Soft Rock period. And I wouldn't throw WTVN on FM. It's on the HD-2 and that's enough. Why? Because WTVN ranks in the top 3 as an AM! I can understand why The Fan wanted to go on FM, but not WTVN. What can CC come up with?

Whatever they come up with, it should go on 106.7 while Gen-X goes to 93.3.

You know what would really be cool? If they put Gen-X on 93.3 and renamed it 93X.

Considerably better than a class A, actually - a maximum A facility at 591 feet (181 meters) would have only 1900 watts.

But still way inferior to 32,000 watts, 617 feet, right?

Yes, of course. One is a B, the other's a B1.

Thanks! Don't know how you happened across this thread, but I'm glad you did. Really enjoy your tower site calendars, BTW.

93X would be nice, kinda like 95X from Long Island which is a Gen X station but much better musically.
ljo, it would be cool because it would be a reference to the late, great Great Trails CHR(and at that time Z-93 sister station) 92X(WXGT 92.3). "93X, The Best of Gen X and more!".

At last check, Laura Lee was PD of Gen X Radio. I'm betting the inventor of the Gen X format, Jon Zellner, has the most say in what gets played where though.

Not sure about Zellner, I correct myself about earlier too, meant 94X in Long Island.
Jon Zellner works in Corporate for CC...he's a smart guy. I believe he used to jock on 92X or 'NCI, one of the two, so he's familiar with the Columbus market. He probably lays out the playlists and then Laura Lee probably just does the logs and such.

The way that CC and other conglomerates shoot the AM dial in the foot by subsidizing the IBOC standard on AM (which makes all participating stations sound inferior to 99.999998% of their listener base), WTVN may have no choice BUT to move or simulcast on FM in the next five years.
