Gen Y future listeners? Yes, but not much to radio

Jerry Del Colliano makes some very good observations in his Inside Music Media blog. Some of his main points:

I was shocked to find young people so distanced from radio. ... young people had a relatively easy time turning away from radio because radio stopped vying for a place in their lives.

Too much repetition, not enough new music.

Feature knowledgeable djs.

Fewer commercials.

Personalities are the appeal.

They want to be your program director. ... Any radio strategy that doesn't include listener participation and active input will fail.

I like this article vaild points but the suits won't listen they do not think big picture they think about the bottom line and that is all. They do not seem to realize the two are intertwined.
 
I think the point of 'featuring knowledgeable DJ's' touches at the heart of why Gen Y doesn't listen to much terrestrial radio, namely a lack of credibility and not featuring air talent that this generation trusts and respects.

Many in radio management make the mistake of thinking that just putting a "young voice" in front of a mic makes their station relevant to a young audience. Wrong. It's knowing who's hip at the moment and who this audience trusts and getting them on the air that can make the station appealing to this demo.

I once half joked about giving Amy Winehouse her own talk show. It's a crazy idea and probably an expensive one. It could even turn out to be a disaster. But I'll bet many Gen Y would tune in.

As it is, we have a slate of safe, middle-aged white guys: Rush, Savage, Dees, Bonaduce et. al who draw an older demo. But there's nothing much here for the future generation of radio listeners.

As a Gen Y listener - I'd tune in to Steven Colbert on the radio.

I must say I just bought a car stereo with 2 GB of memory - and I haven't listened to the radio for days. Not a good sign, since I work in radio.
