GENE BURNS HAS "MILD" STROKE

Monday, January 2, 2012
The old KGO Radio line-up is back on 910 AM, (this week); RL 415 Media Exclusive; UPDATE on Gene Burns
Gene Burns, the ex-KGO veteran scheduled to begin broadcasting this week on the new "Newstalk", KKSF-AM, 910 AM--(Tuesday 4-7 PM after Len Tillem), will not be talking, (due to an unknown situation). Burns is scheduled to be back next week.

UPDATE, 9: 26 PST: Unconfirmed reports indicate Burns suffered a "mild" stroke, but it still expected back. Pat Thurston, a KGO talk-host has stated Burns suffered a stroke, but is recovering.

Consequently, ex-KGOers will fill in for Burns this week, including some of the more popular voices. Here's the schedule:

TUESDAY: Bill Wattenburg
WEDNESDAY: Gil Gross
THURSDAY: John Rothmann
FRIDAY: Rosie Allen

All times, local, 4-7 PM PST on KKSF-AM, "Newstalk" 910 AM

I think any kind of stroke is bad. I hope he is not permanently damaged. All the best.

Sorry to hear Gene has had another medical setback and that we won't be able to hear his voice on the radio for another week. Was really looking forward to it too.

Please take it easy, Gene, and get better. We're rooting for you.

The thing I've always admired about Gene (whether or not I agree with his takes) is his resilience.

He got knocked out in his own adventures half a world away when 9/11 happened, and came back. He had an illness that took him out, and he broadcasts weeks later from his hospital bed. He gets tossed from the once-most-happening radio outfit, and weeks later lands on another, meals included w/Dining Around.

I too hope for his physical and virtual on-air recovery. It serves to pique interest (albeit on the Fear Flannel.)

Long before it became fashionable, his last name to me was a verb. That's right, Gene burns!

Best wishes to a Dr. Burns for a speedy recovery. The curse continues at Townsend Street.

After he came back from that near fatal stroke in Tahiti, at least to me, he sounded more human and reasonable instead of his usual polemic and combative self, arguing less and listening more. That's when I became a fan. And on occasion he would let folks (i.e., idiots) just ramble on while he said things like, "Is that right?" And when a caller would say something moronic, Gene's old self would suddenly return, he'd act indignant, and I'd lol as he called the caller a name.

[Gene Burns did not have a stroke The stroke story came from Rich Lieberman's site he retracted the story an issued an apology to Mr. Burns.

Really? So, what happened to Gene Burns? Contract dispute?

Gene didn't have a stroke in Tahiti...HE fell shipboard and got a nasty gash from a porcelain toilet..then a blood infection ..he was in a hospital in Tahiti for weeks in a coma..but survived!!!!

Any updates on how Gene is doing?

Also just found out that Gene's birthday was a couple days after the KGO firing.

Dang.

How he dealt with what he dealt with and seldom complained on the air. He never sounded like he was on medication either.

Gene has got to be Superman. I worked with him way back in Orlando and later at KGO. He has always had big medical issues and god knows how many surgery procedures over the years. He always been at the top of his game and never complained to us off the air. In '95 while at KGO he suffered a heart issue, as the paramedics wheeled him out he bellowed "I should have had more red wine".

I brought him a bottle in the hospital.

Lots of fond memories of the Great Burns. We socialized, mostly in Orlando. He even visited my wife in the hospital when she had her gall bladder operation.

Ironic aside: In Orlando he told me that KGO once offered him a job if he would become a conservative on the air. He couldn't do it.

Let's pray he beats the odds again.
