Gene Burns Leaving KGO

If you go to the Gene Burns page at KGO Radio's website, kgoam810.com, it has Pat Thurston sitting in for Gene Burns for a couple of weeks or more. If you pull down the schedule, it has her doing the 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm shift with no mention of Burns. Usually, if someone fills in for a personality during that person's shift, his or her name USUALLY remains on the station's schedule.

It is being reported that Gene Burns is leaving KGO. Can anybody fill me in?

The phrase "It is being reported" usually means someone wrote it on a blog somewhere. Google's news search of about 10,000 newspapers, press agencies, and other legitimate websites shows absolutely nothing.

However, a Google web page search shows that Rich Lieberman, a blogger with a history of getting it wrong, is "reporting" this. I don't know if Rich is right, but my instincts as a former news gatherer is that I'm not going to believe it until I see it elsewhere first -- and no loopbacks to Lieberman's blog.

Lieberman is a clown. It seems like he can be rolled by almost anyone with an agenda, and he'll run with it. He's got a certain, uhh, entertainment value, but he's so often just wrong, and so much of what he writes is shaded by his thin-skin about who's slighted him, verses who's proffered some kindness, or a "news" tip. And for a guy who claims to have been a writer with the Chronicle, his language skills (or, to be generous, his proofreading skills) are often atrocious. It's amazing how often he screws up, and then buries his mistakes. A more honest writer would fess up when he's wrong every now and then. (Something Gene Burns often has the integrity to do.)

Apparently that is precisely where the "news" came from. My source printed the item just as it appeared on Lieberman's blog. I am relieved and hope to hear Gene again soon.

Why doesn't someone that knows Gene just ask him what's going on? Maybe he just wants to use up all the vacation time he has coming. Why should he be upset that Karel is coming back anyway? He'll only be there on the weekends.

One of the on-air folks mentioned that he had had some more health problems. It sounded like he's coming back as soon as possible.

Surely this is not the Gene Burns who had a talk redio program on WCBM in Baltimore back in the 1960"s.
According to Wikipedia, he did indeed start his talk-show career there. And don't call me Shirley. (You know, that gag doesn't work in print).

It's definitely the same guy.

Gene Burns had a syndicated show that was picked up by KSFO for mid-days when they first went to Talk after the Oldies format. The mild irony being that Disney/ABC dropped Gene's show when they bought the station and re-tooled it as right-wing Hot Talk. My memory could be off, but I seem to remember that he was replaced on KSFO by G. Gordon Liddy. A year or more later, Burns turned up locally on KGO.

Funniest line on KSFO when it was announced that G. Gordon was coming. Peter B. Collins remarked that he'd never worked on air with a convicted felon before!

I worked with Gene in Orlando in the '70's he once told me that at one time KGO offered him a job if he would be a conservative on the air.
He couldn't do it, it would go against his grain. I guess in those days it was a very different KGO.

We later reconnected in SF.

Medical issues have always been a problem for him. I've often said he is a tribute to modern medical science.

Not to put more focus on Rich, but is it a coincidence that his last name is the same as KGO's GM?

Yes.

According a post on KGO Radio's Facebook page this morning:

Gene will be calling in to Pat Thurston on Friday night at 7:05 ... to tell everyone that he’s healing and doing better. You won't want to miss it!

Good news about Gene Healing.

I just remembered this morning that Gene once ran for President(USA).

He had been the libertarian front runner for the '84 election.
He even came to SF from Orlando and and was interviewed on KGO by Jim Eason. who called him President Burns. He did some other media invus as well.
He had to quit before the LP convention in '83 because the party wouldn't be able to give im the financial support he would need because he'd have to leave his radio gig.
