Gene Burns Passes

Here's what's posted on Facebook, courtesy of Ronn Owens:

We shared tears, laughter and great memories last night on KGO with Pat Thurston, Mickey Luckoff, Ray Taliaferro, John Rothmann and others, remembering our great friend and longtime colleague Gene Burns. Thought you'd want to know that there will be another special program on KGO at 10:00 tonight in remembrance of Gene.

KGO Newstalk 810 AM, San Francisco
Listen to KGO 810 tonight at 10pm for a special tribute to legendary broadcaster Gene Burns. He passed away yesterday at age 72.

So this 10pm 'tribute' is just a rebroadcast of one of his archived shows. It's nice to hear his voice, but I wouldn't classify this as a 'tribute'. I missed Pat Thurston's and Karel's shows last night; too bad they're not doing something similar tonight. For what it's worth, this was the first time I've listened to KGO since December '11...

Here it is, the 10 pm hour on Sunday, May 26 and I finally got 810 AM to come in on the DX skip (KGO's web stream is inaccessible). After hearing a promo for the erstwhile Gene Burns show I heard part of the repeat broadcast complete with outdated time checks and Gene giving out the phone number for the KGO talk line (wow, KGO is offering me the opportunity to call Gene Burns in the grave at 808-0810).

Some "tribute". SFStatic: as far as I'm concerned your friend's efforts were for naught, sorry. I hope Cumulus pays Gene's estate whatever residuals may be due under KGO's AFTRA agreement for this repeat broadcast.

I wouldn't classify this as a 'tribute'
Agreed.

Here's my idea: play Saturday night's (last night's) Karel and Pat Thurston shows next weekend on newstalk 910. Maybe 910 can get the date and time right. Cumulus would allow that for their old colleague Gene, wouldn't they? I hear they're a bunch of sports.

It is tragic that Gene will never know of the outpouring of esteem and affection from his fans and former colleagues at KGO. Thank you, Gene, for so much wonderful radio.

It will be on at 10pm. Monty has been on this morning. From what I hear, they just couldn't pull all the elements together and edit them in time this morning. Having assembled this kind of program myself, I have an idea of the time and effort that goes into it. Perhaps you, David Kaye, can just squat down and hatch such programming, but most people can't.

What's with you? I wasn't critiquing the ability to pull a program together, but the ability of anybody at KGO to get the date and time right.

So, get off your high horse, okay?

Suggestion: Ignore perceived ad-hominem and just reply to the ideas. Otherwise you'll spend all your time arguing about the former.
