GENE & JULIE KVIL

Heard 15 minutes with Gene & Julie this morning. Observations:

Gene sounds like he is 15, maybe 17 years old. Weak voice with little presence and monotone delivery. (Voice isn't everything)

First break I hear is a backsell/frontsell in a music sweep. Something along the line of "...103.7 Lite FM, the refreshing new sound, Gene & Julie, that was and this is..." No timecheck, no quick weather, no promotion, no "stay tuned we're going to be doing this in a few minutes", certainly no content of any kind.

Then Julie comes out of a song and just starts talking with some lady about hair fashion. Mildly interesting I suppose if one is considering a new do or whatever. Obviously no preparation for the interview, a rambling conversation with little point or relevance, tagged with call now and play a game. Interestingly, the even mention that you don't have to win the game, they will just do a drawing from everyone that plays. Well, that's curious! What exactly is the point of playing the game then?! Why not just TAKE the 10th caller or whatever for the free hairdo?...Odd.

While listening, I'm thinking "is this the best guest they can book?". Was this really worth morning drive in this market? Why wouldn't you prepare for any interview you have lined up. Do you simply put them on the air and wing it and hope something cool happens? Would a typical listener getting ready at home, in carpool with the kids, or on the way to work really give a **** about this?

If this is the best your producer can provide, you need a new producer. If this is the best your hosts can do, you need new hosts. If a simple backsell frontsell between two songs with nothing else in the 7am hour in morning drive in Dallas radio is indeed the format, one must question the wisdom of the Program Director.

Consider this: What break on the new 103.7 Lite FM in this mornings show could NOT have been voicetracked?

What break on this mornings show could not have been done on a network, or from any other market in America?

Here's the challenge: Find out what is truly going on in Dallas Fort Worth. Talk about THAT. Find ways to make what is happening HERE relevant, perhaps informative, and if there's any chance at all humorous. It doesn't ALL have to be funny, but starting the day with a laugh will usually please most listeners.

Here's a few ideas: The Cowboys are over. Okay, now what do we do. Acknowledge it, embrace it, because that is what a lot of people are thinking. The fires around North Texas. How can we help? Is there anything we could/should be doing to protect ourselves? Who isn't talking about THAT right now? School is back in. How did it go over the holidays with the kids? What are you doing today that you couldn't do with the kids home the last two weeks? Who was the most annoying relative to visit, what was the funniest thing your kids or family did over the holidays? What gift did you take back? Better, start a gathering of gifts you got that you don't want and do a trade. I got a blender that I don't need or want - another listener has a new answering machine that I could use - let's trade. What is the oddest New Years resolution you heard of? D magazine "best/worst" issue...some pretty funny stuff in there. Get THEM on to talk about it!

LOCAL. You better be local. It's the ONLY reason they would listen to you and not something on satellite. That's the reality.

... not to argue or anything, but:

My wife listens. She likes them. She is in their target demo. If the ratings support them, they'll stay. Otherwise, they'll be gone.

Doesn't mean that I don't agree with ya. But I think that their show will grow more local the longer that they are here.
______________

Grow more local??!!! They've been back for almost a YEAR! This is market #5. They should have been local on day ONE. Don't blame Gene & Julie. They're laughing all the way to the bank. Blame the incompetent person who hired them. Plus they were here before! Sorry there Bingo, I realize you agree with the above post, but if this is good radio to your wife, you guys must really have some arguments about what station you're going to listen to!

Yeah, we do... so?

My wife and I have different tastes. We listen to different radio shows. There is only one show that we both listen to. That's why I am able to offer a varied perspective on various shows, as I am able to get a different opionion from my wife.

Also, every show that moves to this market grows more local over time. Gene & Julie are still trying to offer a certain type of product that is a little more general, but the show will change as it needs to. Or it will be gone. Whichever the ratings decide...
______________

You have summed it up. They are more suitable for Wichita Falls or Boise,Idaho than here. 103.7 Lite is another way to describe,Tax write off. Nikki Nite will probably be gone in 18 months.Thats Infinity /CBS place a puppet PD in charge and blame them for the failures of the boards decisions for the station.

Bye bye. Just like last time.

There may be a reason why Gene and Julie have so little "local" content.

Maybe the plan is to eventually have their morning show nationally syndicated.

Thus, "generic" content can play anywhere, not just Dallas/Fort Worth.

Surely there MUST be a law against that. Oh, wait, that's something about "being in the public interest," not "keeping the public interested."

Why don't they just make it easy on everyone involved and just form a CBS Radio Network and pipe it ALL in from New York? Dump all the local staff at ALL the Infinity stations, break the leases and bail out. Either that or voicetrack. What's the over/under on that happening in the next year?

Gene-n-Julie: It's what comes ON when you hit the snooze button.

Sleep apnea?/ Insomnia? / Gene-N-Julie is cheap, and effective against all kinds of sleep disorders. Habit forming for a well rested sleep. So throw away the Nytol, The SleepeeZ,the Sealy posterpedic matress . One 2 min dose of Gene-N_ Julie and you will drift off to lullabye land. Gene-N_Julie part of the new Lit 103.7 Lite on Talent,Lite on Listners. The all new Lite 103.7. formerly KVIl but don't tell anybody, especially Highland Park

OH MAN! I can't believe this!!!! SOMEONE ELSE WHO UNDERSTANDS RADIO!
The fact is... WE all understand radio, and for over a year or so now, I remember having this discussion many times on this board.

If the higher ups in broadcasting aren't careful, this sort of retort will be more and more on their door steps. LOCAL PEOPLE WHO WISH TO KNOW MORE ABOUT LOCAL HAPPENINGS!

KVIL- home at one time to Ron Chapman, and his philosophy about DFW radio. He took the best of Gordon McClendon, and brought that with him, and created the image of what radio is about. Taking care of the community.

WHEN will the people who work in corporate radio learn to turn loose the PD and let THEM program a station that allows the community to be a part of it.. because lets face it, without the community, well there isn't a reason to have a station...

Funny, how we read on this board about stations like KVIL, The Bone, or other stations that we talk about constantly about how WE can fix them to make them better, or if were PD's of those stations, what changes we would make, but there are stations here that do a great job for the community. KSCS, KTCK, KPLX, because they do take the communities input seriously. And rightly so, and their numbers show it. What was it? the Hispanic stations reaching the lofty numbers in the spring and summer books recently-- can't wait to see the fall numbers, and how they are going to still be on top of their game.. and why???? because the Hispanic community embraces those stations and are loyal listeners... bottom line.. take care of that core audience and they WILL take care of you!

Just a thought!
______________

Nationally syndicating that show would be just like sticking a cherry bomb into the middle of a Texas cow pie!
