Gene Murrell out at WZEW Mobile

Gene Murrell was let go again from 92 Zew (WZEW-FM) in Mobile. He is being replaced by Hurricane Shane from Birmingham effective March 1st. Reason behind the change is budgetary, getting a new morning show and PD for the price of one. Murrell was first let go 2 years ago, came back and now is out again.

i'm a heavy zew listener, have been since i discovered it in college in 97 and worked there from 99-2000 - - they are a unique brand - unique to the area - and really heavily invested in the hangout music festival now. i don't see any benefit in them attempting a format flip - although i don't know much aside from what i see as a listener. there might be a lot more money in hip hop....

Well they did flip to Classic Rock and take the WGCX calls from 104.1 back in the early 90's and later went with Modern Rock before returning to AAA 92 Zew. It seems like markets are loosing Rock stations much faster than they are loosing CHR and I don't see TK101 or 96.1 The Rocket going away anytime soon. It would upset me if 92 Zew dropped AAA but it would not surprise me. I'm actually very surprised that Mobile has supported a AAA station for so long. AAA is just not a common format here in Dixie and I've never figured out what was special about Mobile that kept 92 Zew alive.

in my college years , i heard of the legendary protects zew listeners gave when the station flipped...or even went under. back when it was in the amsouth bank tower downtown?

rumor...but i imagine it happened. such strong rumor...

If "protects" was supposed to say "protest" then I also heard that rumor... from many different people in the radio/live music promotion business. I believe the ownership of 92 Zew (after it flipped back to AAA) was a partnership that dissolved into a lawsuit. I guess the guy who wanted to keep AAA won 92Zew and they both lost ownership of WAVH, oldies Wave 106.5, in the process? Something like that. But who would know if such a group of dedicated listeners and advertisers still exists today?

I remember Hurricane Shane from his work around Birmingham. He was on 106.9 The Eagle when I left in ~2007; it was doing classic hits. Before that he had a very long run at 107.7 The X, Birmingham's well-known alternative rock station. I even met him once back in the 90s, he seemed like a nice guy. The X leaned towards AAA from time to time and had a speciality show called Reg's Coffee House, so I think Shane is probably well suited to his job at ZEW. Mountain Radio was put on, if I remember correctly, after Birmingham lost their AAA "Warm 100" to talk.

I don't get to hear ZEW much at home because the WHEP translator in Foley bleeds over, but when I do listen it's either mind-numbingly bad soft-alt rock or really good off the wall stuff. Very eclectic if nothing else and a good thing to have on the radio even if I don't like 50% of what they play.

i stream them quite a bit and it's always a treat to tune them back in when heading for the beach. you can stream them direct from their website too ya know...

the birmingham station was live 100.5....it was an "AAA" station, but not really. Reg's Coffee House moved to Birmingham Mountain Radio - which is pretty much live 100.5 now.

If i had the money and resources (maybe one day), i'd pay a mix of the zew krew and live 100.5 (and nashville's lightning 100) to remote-program a station for me....
