Gene Nelson on Classic KYA Radio Tonight

In the Classic KYA Time Machine tonight at 7 PM, it'll be an hour of Emperor Gene Nelson on San Francisco's original 1260 KYA from April 1965, hosted by Gary Mora.

Listen online at http://www.kyaradio.com

Speaking of the Time Machine, I'm waiting to find out if there is any truth to the rumor that the best-known host of the Time Machine (K-101 version) may be returning to the air on a local oldies station (with famous call letters) with a new version of the show...

If that's true - and I would like to hear him back on-air again - I hope it's in the daytime,
where that station with the famous call letters has a much better signal than at night...

He was one of my early inspirations that led me to becoming a DJ...

Whoopee! Good luck with that, Chris Edwards.

Maybe I shouldn't always be the fidelity Nazi...but I've begrudginly listened to 1550/KFRC (Gawd I hate writing that) a couple of times, now. Scott Shannon provides some good content...not a bad effort. But it sounds like s**t. Tinny, staticy monaural sound on a puny signal.

There's a reason FM became the go-to place for music on the radio, about...um...let's see...35 years ago.

Between Oldies on KOIT HD2, Classic Hits on KFRC-FM HD2, the plethora of classic hits websites, and multiple channels of Oldies on Music Choice at home (which BF-T plugs in this Sunday's column)...- I can't think of any reason to tune in 1550 again, or any time in the future.

By the way, while I'm trashing CBS - KFRC-FM HD2 is without a doubt the worst HD2 effort on the Bay Area dial. The signal drops out constantly in the car, unlike all the other Bay Area HD2 stations, which have consistently reliable signals.

Please note that at no point in my original post did I mention any names! ;)

Ah, but except for maybe an occasional fill-in, we ALL know who the longtime host of THAT
particular 1980s K-101 program wuz - at least, those of us who listened to him...

No need for names...

That, and my black cloak. Nothing screams mysterious like a guy wearing a cloak.

Dang it all, David! You're scarfing up all the beloved formats and station identities of the past. Today KABL and KYA. Tomorrow, KWUN and KPEN...

...Crossing off the days on my calendar until KGO flips formats so we can do news/talk.

Hmmmm ... there are enough KWUN alums around here that we could do it. We could even set up a walkie-talkie with a crystal tuned to 1480 AM and get about the same coverage!

The timeline is good, except that KWUN ditched its studios and moved to the transmitter shortly after Bill Adler took over in 1972. I remember him telling me about cutting costs. When I worked there in 1973-74 and a bit in 75 it was at the transmitter where the station had a control room studio and a news/interview studio. They also had a production room which could also go on-air if need be.

KWUN was first authorized in 1961, but it took about 3 years go get the extremely cranky antenna pattern to work right. Also, when doing proofs, KYOS in Merced on 1480 (a rocker) had to shut down between songs in order for KWUN to get accurate field strength readings. They were none too pleased to have to do this.

Even when I was there 10 years later, the pattern was extremely difficult to control, and the CE, Alan Graft, didn't even want to touch it. I believe he brought in a specialist any time it went out of compliance. The antennas were also very good for channeling KCBS (740 is half of 1480). You could walk with a radio on 1480 under the far tower and KCBS would overwhelm it.

It used to work but now all I get when clicking on "listen live" is a half-page of HTML code. Happens in both Firefox and IE.

That's actually the XML code that fires off the embedded player. Reload the front page and wait for the "play" button to appear next to "Listen Live."

It sometimes takes a moment for the "play" button to appear.

You can also pick up the audio in Winamp, iTunes, WMP, Real Player or your preferred player at:

FOLLOW-UP: The archive of last Sunday's Time Machine with Gene Nelson is available for download at:

Next up: This Sunday evening at 7 PM, it's Tommy Saunders (later of KSFO and KOIT) and Johnny Hayes (later of KRLA and K-Earth 101) from May 1964 on KYA.
