Gene Pitney tribute on DRC-FM

DRC-FM is going to be airing a one-hour tribute to Gene Pitney at 6 p.m. today (Sunday). Apparently, there's more to it than just a bunch of songs -- although an hour of Pitney is noteworthy enough given the state of oldies radio today -- and it was put together by the "new guy," Scott Michaels. Might be an interesting listen.

By the way, a tip of the cap to John Saville for playing a few Pitney songs each morning this past week. With early '60s pop generally out of the music mix, it's nice to see an exception being made for Connecticut's own Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.

I was surprised with this, but that is a good sign from DRC and the right thing to do. Too bad I was out of listening range when the special aired.

I heard all but the first five minutes of it. All the big hits from "Dream My Life Away" to "Heartbreaker," along with a brief biography and musical chronology read by Michaels. Nothing spectacular, just a nice little tribute that ended with his last hit ("Heartbreaker") and condolences to the family from DRC-FM, then right into the top-of-the-hour jingle and Warwick/Spinners' "Then Came You."

I see on the '60s pop newsgroup on Usenet that WWUH did a TWO-hour tribute to Pitney from 6-8 last night. Unfortunately, I missed that one completely. Imagine, in April 2006, nothing but Gene Pitney at two spots on the Hartford FM dial for a full hour!

DRC-FM stopped streaming in spring 2001 and has never resumed. No archives or podcasts on the Web site. Don't know about WWUH as far as archive/podcast goes; they do stream live.

Correction to my previous post: Pitney's first hit was "Love My Life Away," not "Dream My Life Away."

Kudos to DRC-FM for a fitting remembrance.
