General Complaints About Rock in New York

Maybe I just don't understand New York's alternative culture...but the stream plays way too much emo. Why can't the stream sound more like the WBCN stream: a good mix of new music like the Black Keys and alternative stalwarts Smashing Pumpkins.

Speaking of Smashing Pumpkins, Gish will turn 20 this year. How much longer must we wait 'til "Rhinoceros" gets played alongside "Layla" on the Q? Other notable 2011 20th anniversaries: Ten and BloodSugarSexMagik. "Black" and pretty much anything RHCP ever did belong on the Q. Please, less Foreigner and more bands that actually were relevant at one point.

NYC is a weird place for rock. It's much better defined out in the suburbs like LI and NJ today.

I believe Q plays all of the big 90's rock bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP) BUT the Pumpkins. Give them time.

Have to agree that K-Rock HD2 (which I assume is what you're talking about) plays a bit too much pop-punk/emo. I don't mind some of that mixed in (as long as it's not too far on the pop side of that spectrum), but the emphasis should definitely be on more indie-leaning music. I do admit they've improved from how they were before, and play a lot of good music. I also appreciate that they seem to be becoming a breeding ground for up-and-coming air personalities, though it seems like some of them try too hard to be shock jocks (perhaps at the request of the PD?).

Q104.3 does play a limited amount of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, STP, and RHCP. It seems like they were trying to go a little deeper (by their standards) with those bands for a while, but have backed off now. I think those bands' audiences just aren't compatible with the AOR audience for the most part.

It does seem like WRXP is trying to be a classic rock station for those that grew up with those bands, but either they don't have the formula right or it's just not a good idea for this market. Assuming that the sale of the station isn't a done deal, it might be worth it to give straight-up alternative one last shot, especially considering the ratings increases for the format in other markets. At the very least, I don't think it would hurt them. They're not really doing any better now with the streamlined "Rock 101.9" format than they were as the more eclectic "Rock Experience".

Look Classic Rock seems to fit more in the San Francisco Market than NYC. WRXP if it was in the Bay Area this would fit.

I feel like alot of the 80/90/early 00s stuff out of Cali can fit into a classic rock format now. RHCP: "Under the Bridge", "Breaking the Girl", "Higher Ground", "Aeroplane", "My Friends". Janes Addiction / Porno for Pyros: "Classic Girl", "Stop", "Pets", "Tahitian Moon". Sublime: "Badfish", "Scarlet Begonias". No Doubt: "Don't Speak", "Sunday Morning". Incubus: "Wish You Were Here", "Are You In."

Those songs above are totally inoccuous, none of them are heavier than any of the lead they get out every morning. Most of them are actually quite milquetoast. And most of them are so old to the point of being irrelevant at this point. They belong on classic rock, and stupid Bad Company doesn't.

Here in San Francisco Bay Area, those song are over play and radio station need to be more creative on their songs selection.

"80/90/early 00s stuff out of Cali can fit into a classic rock format" other people (on this forum) saying the same thing. But what's a real definition of classic rock? songs over 20 years old? or put them in decade? yeah! People have different opinion on what type of music should play on a classic rock station.
