GENESIS COMMUNICATIONS ENTERS INTO AGREEMENT TO PURCHASE MEGA COMMUNICATIONS’ 50KW WMGG-AM SERVING FLORIDA’S WEST COAST

September 26, 2008

Tampa, FL

Genesis Communications announced today the purchase of Mega Communications owned WMGG 820 AM marking the third radio station for Genesis in the Tampa Bay market. WMGG-AM is one of Florida’s most powerful radio stations covering the entire west coast from Tallahassee to the Keys. Genesis already owns and operates WWBA News Talk 1040 and WHBO ESPN 1470 serving the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater radio market.

“This purchase adds to our portfolio of great stations in the Tampa Bay market. WMGG will provide us great regional coverage on both the analog and the new digital radio band. This gives our company the opportunity to super serve our audience and advertising clients. We thank Mega’s Adam Lindemann and Eran Schreiber for this opportunity” said Genesis President Bruce Maduri.

Genesis will begin operating WMGG in a local marketing agreement immediately. The sale is subject to FCC approval and is expected to close in early 2009. WMGG-AM currently airs a Spanish language music format. New format plans will be announced by Genesis soon.

Genesis Communications, Inc owns and operates six broadcast properties in the great state of Florida: WWBA News Talk 1040 and WHBO ESPN 1470 serving the Tampa area, WHOO ESPN 1080 and WAMT Talk Radio 1190 in Orlando and WIXC 1060 in Melbourne.

[EDIT]

[EDIT-privacy concerns]

Seems like I remember 820 was previously owned by one of Clear Channels predesessors. (not Jacor). One thing CC did when acquiring AM stations was to be sure they purchased the best signals in the market. The stations they had to get rid of were sold to broadcasters that would not directly compete with them and were not the best signals. Of everything sold, 820 has the best signal (day only) kind of like WGST in Atlanta. I remember during all the changing of stations, that 620 was held by a CC holding company for a while and they had bay news nine on it during that time.
Now we can speculate what formats will go on 1040 or 1470 after the dust settles.

820 came from Paxson, who had a sports station with Hubert Mizell and others as hosts.

As I mentioned in another thread, I think you'll see ESPN move from 1470 to 1040.

Then maybe Rumba 100.7.....
