Just a few days after the death of radio/tv host Jim Lange, now we've lost radio/tv host Geoff Edwards. He died March 5 at age 83. He spent 14 years at KMPC and hosted several television game shows. Geoff was KHJ's program director in 1964-65 before the station switched from AC to top 40. He was at KFI but got suspended and then quit because he refused to promote Tom Leykis's plans to publicly burn Cat Stevens records. Stevens had converted to Islam and supported the Ayatollah's fatwa against Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie. Leykis wound up destroying 200 records with a steamroller because burning them would have caused air pollution. Edwards was replaced at KFI by Rush Limbaugh. And Rushdie is still alive and well in 2014.
My favorite Geoff Edwards bit was "The Answer Lady." He would take several phone calls from listeners and do his best to answer each question. Of course he would use his normal voice, not try to sound like a female. He had one rule: Only one question per person. Many times a caller would begin with "Can I ask a question?" Geoff would say "Yes you can"---and then go to the next caller.
