Geomagnetic Storm Today may affect power and communications

The NOAA report says, in part,

"'Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth's surface,' the statement went on, stating how the storm could 'potentially [disrupt] communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.'"

Here is a somewhat sensationalized version of the story:

The headline is:
World told to brace for 'severe geomagnetic storm' today - the first in nearly 20 years - which could bring chaos to mobile phone networks, GPS satellites and power grid

Aurora FM DX!!! My first time ever in Yakima. Two new in the last hour! Drove home from substitute teaching in Naches WA and heard:

3:25PM - 96.7 KKEX Preston, ID; Kenny Chesney song, ID "Kix 96". Heard over the course of 25-30 minutes. NEW #830, 100KW at 543 miles. Au log #1 in Yakima. I've only heard Au DX one other time. It was a few years ago in Ellensburg, 105.5 KKHB in Eureka CA heard on that opening.
3:40PM - 95.1 KCGY Laramie, WY; local ads, car dealer in Laramie, etc. Drat - was hoping for KYCS (would be new). This becomes the first-ever Es/Au double-play here, heard by both DX modes. Relog, 100KW at 835 miles. I have several (mostly CA) stations via both Es and meteor scatter.
3:46PM - 93.9 KZBQ Pocatello, ID; strong with country music, KZBQ.com mentions. NEW #831, 100KW at 473 miles.

UNIDs on 91.7 (jazz - KEMC MT?), 92.3 ('80s rock, national ads - KYUS MT?), 94.1, 95.5, 96.5, 97.5, 98.1, 101.5, 100.7, other channels too.

We have several CMEs coming our way so this is just the beginning. I expect killer southern AM DX out of this. Look for the Northern Lights - and point the antennas south! Oh, and get the headphones plugged in :)

Nothing fancy on FM here yet but the Chicago dial is jammed from 87.75 to 107.9. AM might be a treat tonight and into the waking hours on the morrow.

AM skywave tonight in Denver is very dead. What I believe was KGOW was coming in with Vietnamese-language programming for about 20 minutes on 1560 shortly after 8 pm MDT but then disappeared altogether. Boulder's KCFC, a graveyarder at 1490 that normally is swamped in Denver at night, is coming in quite clearly with almost no interference. Likewise 1360 KHNC Johnstown, CO (Denver is in a minor back lobe of its night pattern). Nothing really distant until 1050 XEG, which is coming in steadily. Will keep checking farther down the dial.

Edit to update: And that's it for any distant reception. Colorado stations from outside the Denver metro that can normally be heard, but with a lot of interference, are unbothered by it tonight: 1010 KSIR (Brush-Ft. Morgan) and 740 KVOD (Colorado Springs) are notable examples. They may not necessarily be any stronger than usual but the lack of interference makes them stand out clearly.

Wow. I think it's been decades since I've experienced such dead nighttime skywave.

No skywave at all heard on the Utah and Pennsylvania WebSDRs, or on my radio here in Vermont. Ham signals are uniformly watery-sounding on all bands via SDR, with the most activity on 40 meters.

Wow. I got out my AM tuner and tried thanks to Mark and CT. I think this is the first time in my life I've dialed to 650 after dark and not heard WSM from my location near Owensboro, Ky.

Other reliable clears at night -- WLW, KMOX, WHAS totally gone.

Interestingly, I may be getting reception from the deep south much better:

I heard Cuba's Radio Enciclopedia on 530 with a fair signal (no definitive ID, but a unique format)
670 was very weak Spanish music instead of the usual WSCR/Chicago, so I'm assuming R. Rebelde (but no definitive ID)
750 WSB/Atlanta is there, but weak.
WBAP was absent on 820.
I got a definitive ID on 870 WWL/New Orleans with good signal. I don't think I've ever logged WWL, but it's not a frequency I typically check.

MORE AURORA FM DX!!!

6:45PM - 97.3 KOLC Carson City, NV; with muffled yet positive ID 'Ten Country at 97.3.' NEW #832, 87KW at 508 miles.
6:50PM - 94.1 KMXB Henderson, NV (36 north latitude!!!); with playlist match, Mix 94-1 IDs, Train and Jelly Roll songs. Relog (via Es), 100KW at 786 miles.
6:55PM - 100.7 KTHU Corning, CA; the forecast for Chico, and Thunder IDs. NEW #833, 50KW at 473 miles.
6:56PM - 98.1 KISQ San Francisco, CA; Traffic reports mentioning I-80 and San Jose. Relog (via Es), 75KW at 610 miles.
6:55PM - 98.5 KRXQ Sacramento, CA; 98 Rock and DJ banter. NEW #834, 50KW at 548 miles.
7:00PM - 93.1 KFBK-FM Pollock Pines, CA; with KFBK IDs and into ABC News. NEW #835, 20.5KW at 549 miles.

This is absolutely incredible!!! This is the biggest solar storm since October 2003. The K level hit 9, which is extreme (and it's ranked G5 now, also extreme). The biggest aurora I have ever experienced.

In fact, AM on the KA7U receiver in Weiser ID is very interesting. 1460 is a solid XEYC Ciudad Juarez and NOTHING else. Radio Formula mentions. 1440 KFOO Riverside, NOTHING else. 1480 has an UNID SS that I'm trying to ID. 540 is KNMX NM and NOTHING else. KJYE Delta CO on 1400 (mixed with 1-2 others).
The W0AY receiver in western Montana is even more wiped out. Everything is groundwave below 1000 except for 3-4 big stations very weakly (KGO and KXNT come to mind). Insane conditions and it's just starting.

My TEF 6686 is pulling in an unid 1210 Religious station that may be well-wanted KPRZ San Marcos which puts literally NOTHING towards us!!

Weiser ID continued

1220 KHTS Canyon Country completely dominant. KVTA on 1590 with Coast to Coast and an UNID Regional Mexican under.
1510 KFNN Mesa AZ putting 100 watts out into the air talking about business investments - and it's S6!! I have an UNID 1480 Spanish station with a huge signal, and recording it to look later.
1330 tentative KCKM Monahans TX.

In Yakima, the 1210 faded before BOH. 1340 is KIHR and KJOX in and out - and I think both are enhanced groundwave. Only KWNC on 1370. Very little skywave at this point except for 4 or 5 LA stations, KFBK, KGO, maybe 2-3 others. What's on the graveyards is all sheer groundwave at this point.
If only I could reel in Ecuador, or something...

EDIT - the 1480 is KPHX Phoenix AZ 'La Hermosa'

Lots of noise on MW in my area, but I managed to pick up a few stations that I only get during the day. Most of the graveyard frequencies were listenable because only one station would occupy it. For example, I got my HD-only station 1230 WFAS with a loop during the late night hours. That's usually a daytime catch.

Complete and total wipeout at NM7A's SDR on Orcas Island.
Not even KFBK is in. 50,000 watt blaster is completely MIA and gone. Everything is groundwave. Unbelievable!

Seems to be a pirate on 1610khz from the W0AY receiver in western MT. I suspect somewhere in California or Nevada. Oldies music and definitely not CHHA.
1490 KRKC King City CA solid S9+10 DB with only 1 other co-channel. 799 mi. Wow! The other sounds like Punjabi/Indian.

Central Kentucky:
Nothing from the north. No Chicago. No Detroit. No Northeast.
No KMOX, WSB or WWL.
With the absence of CFZM (usually in strong here), a weak KRMG Tulsa. KRMG is very seldom heard here at night. Due to the aforementioned CFZM

Tried again in Denver just after 11 pm. Still pretty dead but a few more things, notably 1020 KCKN which was much stronger than usual but with deep fades. Of the regulars here - WHO, KMOX, KFAB, KRVN, etc. - there was only KRVN, weak, probably groundwave since it's not all that far away.

KUSA 9News has some photos - I couldn't see anything in Denver due to light pollution. Aurora borealis dazzles over Colorado

This is truly an amazing planet we live on.

It's not over.
More CMEs are coming, some of which could take it back up to extreme K-9/G-5 levels. In fact, it was at 9 for a quick moment this morning, and right now is at 8.6.

Hoping we get a second shot at the Northern Lights. Great pictures all around East Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains, including Cades Cove.

I monitored the Central Indiana SDR. I had a True Oldies station on 1550 and 1410 (could have been WHLN, Harlan). A Spanish station was wiping out WLAC for awhile. No idea what. Dueling weak Spanish stations on 770. The receiver was still picking up WNOP, Newport KY, no CFZM. Then the band got mostly quiet.

Holy crap! @crainbebo

You picked up KCKM in Washington state? I've never logged them, but have tried my hardest on the nighttime power down of Tyler local KGLD, also on 1330. Not even once. Good catch up there in the PNW.
