George Allen Passes Away

Some may also remember George as afternoon drive host on WARV in its pre-Christian days. The station had a remote studio at the then-Midland Mall. It was under a stair well in the ground floor, very visible. He'd sign off with a nice piano version of the standard "That's All". He'll be missed!

That's sad. He even worked at my old station WSAR for a while. They gave him a talk show sometime in the early 90's. He's one of those people I haven't thought of in years, but do remember very very well. Rest In Peace George. All good memories whenever I think of you. In reference to his Dialing for Dollar days, (He's now one from the Top.) You'll be missed.

George was a good guy and will be greatly missed. I remember him back at WLKW when I did weekends on the FM side. He worked on the other side of the glass at AM 790, playing The Music of Your Life. He'll definitely be going into the Radio Hall of Fame in the sky.

George started in radio at WPEP in Taunton then was hired at the original WLKW (990) to replace Bob Basset when Bob moved over to what was then WTEV (Channel 6). There Bob did sports and a public affairs show called "Community". When George left 'LKW to go TV I followed him for a year or so and was pointedly told to NEVER play the Peter Nero version of "That's All" because it was exclusively George's. Both he and Basset (who also started out at WPEP if memory serves) were great guys to work with and were able to generate downright insanity when playing off each other!

Had the pleasure of working with George during the 60's at WLKW 990 at the upper floors of PPAC. I followed him on Sunday mornings. Always upbeat, funny and so likable. One-of-a-kind. Condolences to the family.

I remember watching him on D.F.$ as well as listening to him in 1995 on then-WARA. Tried finding info on him recently.

One of George's early TV efforts was hosting a bowling show for Channel 6. The show was taped at an alley just a little past Green Airport on Sunday mornings. The camera/control truck was rented from WWLP in Worcester but the tape was recorded on a 2" Ampex 1200 that was loaded into a U-Haul truck every week. One of the WWLP crew often brought porn reels (Behind the Green Door was one) which provided entertainment for the crew between "episodes". Sometimes recording of an episode was delayed while George was hunted down and captured. Guess where he was usually found!

I replaced George doing mornings at WPEP waaaay back when. Later our paths crossed again at WNBH. I was doing six to midnight. He was next door at WTEV channel 6. He'd pop in once or twice a week at night to cut some production. Both at PEP and WNBH hr gave me some solid radio advice and info. A good man. RIP, George.
