George Jennings has Passed

When Barry Mac and I hijacked KAAY for Labor Day weekend a couple of weeks ago, George Jennings did a great interview on "the good ol' days".... We had him and Pat Walsh on that night... Hard to believe that less than four years later, both of them are gone.

He is as legendary as it gets both in Arkansas and in San Antonio....

I've got the audio of all that somewhere. The Mighty 1090 is a great old station!

Nice obit on George in todays Democrat-Gazette.

Thinking about George, brought about some thoughts on some other folks that worked at KAAY during that era. Don't get me wrong, the jocks during those years were just GREAT.

Besides George, you also had Nancy King and a young Bob Steel, who had the air-name of Mark O'Sullivan.

How many of you ole timers remember KAAY early in the morning with the Farm Service Director Marvin Vines ?

Monty--

Although we've never met, I'm sure we must have some mutual acquaintances. I remember when Bob Steel worked for KAAY and definitely remember Marvin Vines. I had the pleasure of meeting as well as working with some of the "voices" I listened to as a teen in South Arkansas. People like George, A.J. Lindsey AKA Doc Holiday, David B. Treadway, Barry (last name escapes me) AKA Michael J. McCormick, Bob Robbins, Sonny Martin, and I'm sure I'm leaving someone out. Those folks are a large part of why radio intrigued me and why I'm still trying to earn a living doing something I love (well most days I love doing it).

On behalf of people who probably will never say it to your face, "thanks for making a difference in the lives of people working in as well as listening to radio".

I can't count Steel as a personal friend, but we have met several times. He tells the story of how he got his gig at KAAY, which is truly wonderful.

Said he was working here in Conway at KCON on the weekends. He continued that George and another man were fishing on Lake Conway and listening to the radio when they heard Bob doing the news on KCON. A short time later, Bob was working at the mighty 10-90. That is the shorten version, but it is the one I have heard the most.

A couple of names that I had forgotten that you posted...Mike McCormick and of course Sonny Martin. I use to see Sonny once or twice a year at the boat show in Little Rock. He is very friendly and always took a few minutes to visit. I understand he is working in Searcy now.

I've got an aircheck of Bob Steel hiding out and accosting Spiro T. Agnew in the lobby of what is now the Best Western Presidential in downtown Little Rock... I gave it to him a couple of months ago, not knowing that "Michael-O on your radio" would soon be returning to KARN.

KAAY is the one station that could truly show you the power of radio in the 1970's.... They really did it right!

They really did do it right...back when I was in school we talked about what someone did on the air. It was always something like, did you hear what Sonny Martin or Bob Robbins said or did on the air the other day or George Jennings said on the news that.....

KAAY...it was simply THE station.

Still miss it.
