George Jones passing

Saw on CNN George Jones passed, turned on WESC and the female jock did not mention it at all, only praised iheartradio, though there was some male voice after that mentioning he died and go to iheart for more info? Sounded canned to me.

Back when my father had a landscaping business in the 80's and listened to the old WESC here Bob Hooper would have probably come back in to and put listeners on air and featured Jones tunes all day.

I tune in to give local a chance and they are blowing it again, maybe I can go to WSM on tune in.

One of the biggest names in Country Music passes away, and much-a nothing. The old WESC would have been all...I said...ALL...over it!
Why can't I hear it now? Why do I have to go to iHeart to get the scoop? Why do I have to press one...for English? The (alleged) Rock stations do it too: We recently lost Alvin Lee, and a year or so back, Gary Moore; two of the greatest Guitarists that ever lived. Maybe a mention or one song, but no tributes; nothing with any starch!

WESC is canned outside of mornings, anyway, so it's not a surprise. This has become common with breaking news, unfortunately.

True, but it's not just breaking news to a station like that one.

That's an artist they have probably played for decades and I bet they still play him today as a legend-he is a big deal in country music I believe. It's not just a news story to a station that still plays some of the old traditional country songs today, this is where you used to turn when an artist died-the radio. From Elvis to Lennon through Micheal Jackson Whitney radio was and needs to be immediate and intimate-it's not now though.

Scooter these younger people today just don't care. Many of them are in the "biz" and are probably today going "who the hell is George Jones" so they see it as a non-story. I teach college and you'd be surprised at how much kids today don't know, its baffling. They know nothing of history, their culture, and definitely not music unless it's been in the last 4-5 years. Sad, really sad. I'll miss The Possum, one of the greatest talents to grace country music. I'm not a huge country music fan but I always loved George's music, he will be missed.

Actually, I had WESC on for a bit this afternoon, and they were playing some George Jones songs., but not a wall-to-wall tribute. Plenty of George Jones on WNCW tonight.

Isn't WESC premium choice now? I know they are on weekends (they actually use the canned talent that doesn't mention the station name, like 96.7 does, MY and WSSL don't use that). I wonder if other CC stations did the same.

We heard of George Jones's passing away about 2 minutes after his death but wasn't sure about the report. We couldn't find anything about it on the internet to confirm the report at first and didn't want to go on the air here at WLRE radio with the news till we had something else telling us it was true. I sat there staring at the monitor waiting what should I do then my phone went off with a text message from WLTX channel 19 about George Jones's death so I went on the air made the report that George Jones may have just passed away and would give more details in just a few minutes and started playing He Stopped Loving Her Today. At 5 minutes after his passing GAC had the announcement on the net so we went on the air made the announcement that yes he had passed away and started mixing George Jones songs in our rotation. People who were listening to us started hitting Facebook with the news. By 9 minutes after his death we saw the associated press announcement a minute or two after that yahoo had it. We have one of the largest George Jones song collections anywhere here at WLRE so we will have a lot of his music in heavy regular rotation over the next few days.

This is an old story, many years back, but still from...
The O-Possum Files: Apparently, the stae had interviened, and pulled his driver's license for (say it ain't so!) too many DUI's. Nessessity being the mother of invention...or in the case,...Anti-intervention.
He drove his lawn tractor to the red dot. If you close your eyes, it captures an imagery all its own,...and the round trip was successful. Sometime, around 85-86, I was doing some backstage, contest winners, photography for WSSL. Jones, did show, and played The Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. Just before he left the building to board his motor coach, someone yelled...."How fast is you lawn mower?". He laughed, shook his head, and whipped back..."35-minutes to get there, but a lot longer to get home!".
...and all the true Broadcasters spoke:
Rest In Peace, Country Music Legend!
Scooter Lesley.

What I heard on a weekday was no doubt canned...not sure about premium choice or the difference between that and voicetracking or canned but it was prerecorded and a mess.

I guess we have to realize the truth about our two Country stations. Here, today, when a group purchases/acquires/owns both Monster Country stations in the same market, one will garner favor, while the other will become their step-child. At one time, when the playing field was even, WESC always edged WSSL. If CC has a idea for something local, WSSL is the company's only answer. Taking into account that WESC has, now, only two Air Talents holding it all together, it's an easy understanding that they, CC, have carved it into one of their Premium/Prime choice iHeart stations. So, regarding this topic, the passing of George Jones, it would/will be no different if we lost Willie, Kenny, Dolly or any other Country Legend. Also, as I said, in an ealier typing, THE ROAD is not only a PC/iHeart station, but was launched to shave male numbers away from WROQ, benefiting WSSL, with an easier path to the Top 3. For Rock 101 & The Road...the playlists are 98% exactly the same. I see it as a grand oppertunity for ROQ to improve their playlist, and go after double-digit ratings. This action would trump the Road's efforts, and because they are iHeart, they could not follow the change. Sadly, no one at ROQ has the smarts to know what to add.
Hats off, to the "Old" WESC-FM...Radio that served the public, and was a Cash Cow for its owners!

Keep in mind that today's country stations typically play music from the last 15-20 years. George Jones' last hit was in 1989. Not long after, he was dropped by his label, and that was it. He had a couple of novelty songs after that, but he's mostly an oldies act. His music appeals mainly to people outside the country radio demo. They may know a couple of titles, but that's about it. It's music for the previous generation. Which is the specialty of WSM-AM and similar stations.

I pretty much never listen to WESC, but they used to play (even a couple of years ago) a lot of stuff from the 70s and 80s, so I can see the relevance it would have with a lot of their listeners.

Jones stopped getting radio play in the early 90s, and he complained about it a lot. If current stations were playing older music, it was usually by artists still having current hits, like Strait or Reba. The arrival of Garth Brooks & Alan Jackson in 1989 pretty much ended the radio careers of Jones, Haggard, and others from the previous generation.

Big A you are right on one hand but George was right about another the 90's is when things started to go in a different direction that has left us with the mixed up crap that Nashville among other places passes off as Country Music today. Some of the new Country Music isn't bad but a lot of it is just plain crap pure and simple.
