George Lehner out at WTVN

According to today's Columbus Dispatch, George Lehner's contract has not been renewed at WTVN and he is no longer with the station. This ends Lehner's twenty year run as Sports Director at WTVN.

The irony in this story is that George Lehner is scheduled to be inducted into the Ohio Radio and Television Broadcasters Hall of Fame later this year.

Like him or not, George was a true personality in an increasingly bland business.

I agree with the part about the business becoming increasingly bland. But you think Lehner had true personality? You wanna talk about personality, talk Spook Beckman, Jimmy Crum, Flippo or even Dave Kaelin! Lehner was okay, but for the most part he was just "there", IMO. Same thing when he was on TV.

You gonna hire him Bohach??? LOL

Somehow I don't think George is going to want to do color commentary for HS sports in Fairfield County for what we pay.

However, I do have an opening for Color Commentator/Stat Keeper for the 2006-2007 school year. If anybody's interested in applying, send an email to [email protected]. Previous experience preferred but I will look at all applicants seriously.

i must admit i don't get this one..........is biz that bad in columbus that they are cutting folks at cc??????

610/tvn had always prided themselves on their news/sports coverage .....

jeez....what next..."BC" being reduced to part time.....????!!!!!!

Matt McCoy is perfectly capable of stepping in to Lehner's shoes. Heck, he was doing all the work anyway. Now it's time for him to get some of the credit.

It simply goes to show that nothing in life, or Radio, is forever. Not a single one of us is indispensible. Valuable, yes. Indispensible (and infallible), no.

Best of luck to George. Congratulations to Matt. George was one of my radio idols when I was a teenager, even though I've never met the man. George Lehner, John & Jane, John Remy, even Steve "Boom Boom" Cannon. They're ghosts of Columbus Radio past, but those days will live on in memory. John & Jane were the first talk radio hosts I listened to which got me hooked on the N/T format. I'm sure Jane would love to know that in Denver.

Lehner is the latest out the door at WTVN
After 20 years as the sports director for 610 WTVN, George Lehner knows the station's spring football drill well.
This time of year, the tempo speeds up a little at 610, which still advertises the "best Buckeye coverage" though it hasn't broadcast Ohio State games for two decades.
Early last week, Lehner received confirmation of his trip to the Big Ten football meetings at the end of July. And at the station, he sat in on a series of fall planning sessions.

I'll throw some speculation on where George will be headed next: Cincinnati.

Clear Channel is moving its sports format to 1530. George would reunite with Daryl Parks, who used to be PD at WTVN.

Needless to say, he'll be cheaper than Jerry Springer.

But while progressive talk may not have been doing well in Cincinnati, it's a different case here in Columbus.

Latest Arbitrends released today...WTVN down from 7.3 to 7.2--a drop of a full point from winter.

Meanwhile, WTPG up from 1.4 to 1.7...nearly double the numbers from a year ago. And my contact says the numbers aren't because of the Reds.

Keep in mind--this is a station with no local on-air staff except for the borrowed traffic services of Craig Sinclair.

As for a part-time BC...no. A more realistic scenario would be Corby replacing Limbaugh if Rush has more drug-induced episodes. This would leave room for Ed Schultz to move to 610 and Randi Rhodes to go live on 1230. Of course, a Schultz-Hannity battle in Columbus would be interesting, but unlikely. Especially if Lionel live is beating Sean on tape delay.

Personally, I am awaiting the day when Stephanie Miller overtakes Glenn Beck.

Whoa don't get too excited there. 1230 is a wasted signal that ClearChannel has used as a cheap companion to 'TVN. 610's ratings aren't that bad, and compared to others in the format, they do quite well in Columbus. Now 1230's rating (BTW, I thought we couldn't post ratings numbers!!!) is nothing to write home about. Where do you see where Sean is being beaten by Lionel??? Hannity consistently ranks as one of the top 5 highest-rated radio talk show hosts in America (Beck and Rush are also up there, and look they're all on TVN!).

1. Prior to becoming a progressive talk station, when it was Real Oldies 1230, the station scored a 0.4.
2. I didn't say Lionel was beating Hannity. But my contact, from whom I've bought advertising time on the station, tells me Time Spent Listening (TSL) to WTPG is higher than with WTVN. She also told me younger listeners are increasingly tuning in during evening hours to the Majority Report and Lionel.
3. Limbaugh nationally still reigns the roost, according to Talkers Magazine, with 13.5 million listeners, but it's a drop of 250,000 from the previous rankings, which were based on his audience before his drug arrest. Hannity's second-place ranking remains steady with 12.5 million listeners.
4. As for Glenn Beck, he beats Stephanie Miller with respect to total listeners. However, Stephanie kills Beck with respect to total listeners per station. Beck has 2.75 million listeners on more than 200 stations, for an average audience per station of less than 14,000. Stephanie has 1 million listeners on more than 40 stations, for an average audience per station of roughly 25,000. (She just added Portland this week, and Miami and Ithaca, NY, earlier this month.) And Stephanie recently became the #2 talk show in her home market of Los Angeles--on a Clear Channel station.
5. The ratings numbers cited were from www.AllAccess.com, which anyone can see by registering at the site for free.
6. As for the ratings not being that bad, tell that to George Lehner or Steve "Boom Boom" Cannon.
7. Finally, and this will floor you...Rush Limbaugh debuted in Columbus on AM 1230.

No offense, but you can't be that stupid, can you? What do you expect someone to say when they are trying to sell time on such of a dog? Did you also believe the salesman who told you that the Yugo is a more reliable vehicle than any other import? Furthermore, WTVN's drop in the ratings is statistically insignificant. You shouldn't make business decisions based on your political passions. You would probably get more bang for your buck advertising on a station people actually listen to.

I'm smart enough to know the type of customers I am trying to attract and (no offense, Dirty Harry), but you're not someone I'd want as a customer.

Shouldn't have had the job in the first place. I'm wondering if he was caught doing something. Always came off as a total closet case creep imo. Good riddence, fat boy. ;D

SERIOUSLY.... It took you six years to come up with that !

Always thought George did a nice job. Matt McCoy is good as well, but I still miss George.

About a year ago I e-mailed Corby about George, and he said last he heard Lehner was selling medical equipment, he thought.

Guess they didn't stay in touch.

That's odd. I always thought they were something of a twosome. Buddies.

Guess it's true. Radio IS theater of the mind.
