George Lopez Upset That ABC Cancelled Him. Says TV is Really Really White Again

Funny guy, great standup act but this show has always been awful.

He should just be thankful that it lasted as long as it did. It lasted longer than other ABC sitcoms that were much funnier (Rodney Carrington and Bonnie Hunt's shows come to mind).

At least ABC had the decnecy to not cancel it until there were enough episodes in the can for syndication making George a rich man.

I hate the way people use this race stuff without facts. I suppose "Laverne And Shirley," which tanked went it moved to Thrusdays (then brought back) was sexism as was "Designing Women," which went from #6 on Mondays to cancelled when it moved to Fridays. And how much they shifted that show around. Also the second Cosby show which did OK on Mondays and failed on Fridays. "Malcolm in the Middle," I mean need I say more.

The list goes on and on of shows being moved at random (or seemingly so). Let's blame anything but the truth is no comedy is truly doing well. All except "Two and a Half Men" and the now cancelled "King of Queens" are marginal. Comedy is pretty much dead, for now at least. ("King of Queens" has reportedly held up in ratings as well as all the returning CBS comedies.)

Some possible solutions....

Who's responsible for the production of the George Lopez show? If they're related to any network (unless the prod-co is Disney), then maybe that corresponding network can air new episodes. Or the show can air in first-run syndication as well as repeats....

Ever watch CW or BET? Plenty of shows on those networks with African-American actors. So please don't get me going on that tired of chestnut that there are not minority actors on television. George Lopez's show sucked air and I'm surprised that ABC kept it on as long as they did. He got his millions and still has his stand-up comic routine, so Lopez needs to shut-up and quit complaining. There have been better shows canceled than his stereo-typical program.

The show is not funny. For a sitcom that's a bad thing. This brings to mind Damon Wayans a few years ago complaining that his show was being moved around the schedule because he was black.

America Ferrera leads 'Ugly Betty', which is very popular, and on ABC.

'Scrubs' has a black main character[Turk] and an Hispanic[Carla].

'Desperate Housewives' has two Hispanic main characters[Gaby and Carlos].

'Lost' has two Korean main characters[Sun and Jin], and 'Heroes' has Japanese and Black main characters.

'The Unit' has a black main character.

'24', 'ER' and 'Grey's Anatomy' also has/had many non white main characters, and the reality shows have contestants and judges of different origin than white.

I believe the CBS dramas and the 'Law and Order' series has also.

I agree completely. Part of the reason for ABC's falling to second in 1979-80
was the movement of three of its hits to other nights; besides "Laverne & Shirley"
there was "Mork & Mindy" (from Thursday to Sunday, where it got clobbered by
"Archie Bunker's Place") and "Fantasy Island" (from Saturday to Friday). Offhand,
only "M*A*S*H" comes to mind as a show that changed time slots several times and still held its own near the top of the ratings.

Comedy was considered "dead" in the '80s, until "The Cosby Show" revived the genre to the point that I once counted 61 sitcoms on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, UPN, and the WB combined. But the question is, where is the next Bill Cosby? And
I don't care if he or she is white, black, brown, or a flying purple people eater.
I'd just like to see a good sitcom.

I watched several shows; wasn't funny; didn't watch again. Maybe ABC is the (electoral college) and the "voters" have spoken.

Re: George Lopez Upset That ABC Cancelled Him. Says TV is Really Really White Ag

I've got a beef of my own about the "Caveman" show:
it's set in Atlanta! I keep having visions of the cavemen
being depicted as smarter than the locals, who, in turn,
are depicted as Southern stereotypes. I hope I'm wrong.
I WANT to be wrong. But unless Atlanta is shown as the
hip, thriving city that it is, with plenty of educated and
intelligent people, this would be one time when I wouldn't
care if WSB pre-empted a network show.

As it is, I don't even like the commercials.

Re: George Lopez Upset That ABC Cancelled Him. Says TV is Really Really White Ag

As a man of Hispanic origin, George Lopez's comments embarrass and anger me. What part of "Your show sucks!" does he not understand? I don't watch a show because the lead is Hispanic, Black, White, Red or Yellow...I don't care for that! I watch shows that I find interesting and entertaining. Remember the "Seinfeld" episode where Kramer was at the Puerto Rican Day Parade? I was not offended by what occurred; however, some members of "my" community took great offense.

OT: If that's offensive, what am I (and I'm sure many others) suppose to think about what happened at that parade about 2-3 years ago? Now that was offensive (and embarrassing)! I'll take Kramer over that anyday.

Do a thorough survey of the people writing, producing, starring-in and greenlighting TV projects, then try making the above statement again. Or, to indulge a really dumb sentiment--think long and hard about why there isn't a 'White Entertainment Television'.

1. Only The CW is a broadcast network, and most of its programming it carried over from the defunct UPN. BET airs sitcom reruns of shows that didn't make the jump to The CW, as well as earlier "Girlfriends" episodes.

2. The problem isn't actors of color on TV--it's the roles AND the amount of color they're concerned with. The traditional broadcast networks have been notoriously chicken about doing shows with all minority casts, or even having a minority in the lead role. One wouldn't have to look hard to find a show with an all white cast or one with one/two token minorities cast. Ensemble casting addresses this somewhat, but that brings up the question of 'who's doing the lead' again.

3. The George Lopez Show was the only third program on U.S. television with a Latino lead character(s) to ever last more than one full season. The first two? I Love Lucy and Chico And The Man. I don't think there have been any such shows for Asian-Americans, though the closest example would have been the short-lived "All-American Girl" starring comedian Margaret Cho.

There have been several African-American shows to have success, but they've largely come by way of the startups (the defunct WB and UPN). Other than "My Wife and Kids" or "The Bernie Mac Show", the original broadcast nets haven't had a good record of putting on shows with a lot of diversity in them. Specifically, I cannot remember a mostly Black or Latino show ever getting a shot on CBS or NBC in years. But we have plenty of sitcoms and dramas featuring the young Caucasian starlet/hunk of the month looking for love and adventure in New York/Los Angeles getting greenlit and subsequently canceled every year.

You can even see this in 'reality TV'--how many show have just one minority contestant (almost always a Black female so they can cover race and gender simutaneously)?

Yeah, there's diversity on TV, but it ain't because of the actual storytelling or the creative process. It's usually and afterthought because of who's in charge. Things are changing, obviously, but not necessarily very quickly.

Ensemble casting. It has diversified the TV landscape, though you still have shows with mostly white casts without seeing the other extremes (mostly Latino, mostly Asian, etc.).

How about asian representation in the media, especially the asian males.

The Ego Trip specials on VH1 ("Race-O-Rama" and "TV's Illest Minority Moments") did a pretty good job of talking about the roles and stereotypes used when casting people of color on TV. Asian men have largely been cast as weak, submissive nerds--though some have been lucky to know kung fu. ::) :-\
