George Michael on KLIF in 1971?

Hello, first time posting here. I lived here in Philadelphia all my life, and enjoyed listening to Top 40th radio stations here, and others around North America growing up. Does anyone remember hearing legendary dj, George Michael working at KLIF for a short time in 1971? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The last I heard about that guy was something about a cop, a park, and a men's restroom..

Are we talking Sports Machine George Michael or Former frontman of WHAM! George Michael?

Let me correct myself, I'm talking about the former Sports Machine host, who along with doing this was, a long time Philly dj at WFIL radio and also worked at WRIT in Milwaukee, KICN in Denver, WABC in NYC, did color for the Baltimore Orioles, and lastly was the sports director at WRC TV in Washington DC from 1980 to 2007 until he retired. In November he was inducted into the Philly Pioneer Broadcaster's Hall of Fame.

Far as I've been told, the "Sports Machine" George Michael did indeed work at KLIF-1190. Someone who could shed more light on this is Steve Eberhart, webmaster of www.klifhistory.com. Contact him at [email protected] (be sure to put "KLIF" in the subject line.)

I did run through the Dallas Morning News archives with George's name and came up empty.

Johnny Williams' 440 Satisfaction site also lists George at KLIF in 1971:

http://www.440.com/namesm3.html#_gmicha

One stop it does not list is his return to Denver in the mid-60s to the same
frequency (710), but then with the calls KBTR. In summer '66 he was doing
11am-3pm, right after Don McNeill's Breakfast Club. ::) I guess even if you
weren't an O&O, you still had to carry that format killer if you wanted to air
"news five minutes sooner." ;)

George Michael (not of Wham! fame) DID work at KLIF briefly in 1971. He went on to WABC for years and of course did television in NYC before beginning his George Michael Sportsmachine syndication TV show.

CORRECTION!
The information I relied on to report George Michael at KLIF in 1971 came from an entry on 440.com which lists jocks and where they worked...ON George's, it mentioned that he worked at KLIF in 1971....I was an avid listener at the time and never remembered hearing him on KLIF.
To clarify I just emailed Michael O'Shea who was on the staff of KLIF from 1967 to 1973 and PD during 1971.
Here is the definitive word on this issue:

Hi Steve...

I can say unequivocally that it did not happen.

Here's how sure I am of it:

1) I was PD there and knew EVERYONE (67-73.).

2) I'm a HUGE George Michael Fan. You see, when I was 15 in
Springfield, Illinois, and itching to be a disc jockey, George was on
WIL, St. Louis, which I listened to regularly. And the ONLY time I
ever won anything on the radio was a George Michael "Tiger Pen" in '62
on George's show in St. Louis.

3) I would have for sure known if my radio hero was on MY staff <smile>.

George was on that great WFIL, Philly staff in '65-'67 (Jay Cook, PD).
Now about the time you mention ('70) I hired Dickie Heatherton from
WFIL to come to KLIF. Dickie was pretty close to George. So, I wonder
if your info might have to do with Dickie, rather than George Michael.

Thats what I know...and I'm standing by it. <smile>

See ya,

MO

Steve, thanks for solving the George Michael mystery for me. Also, other djs who worked at KLIF, who also worked in Philly included, the late great Jim O'Brien and Randy Robbins at WFIL, and Don Wade, who worked with his brother John at WIBG.
